In Sierra Leone, Violence in Freetown Again!

This week has been marred by reports of violence in various parts of the country, with the latest being deadly attacks launched against peaceful citizens in Freetown by rampaging youths on Tuesday 1st February 2011.

Parts of the Freetown city were put under siege in the evening hours of Tuesday when pupils and guests returning from the annual athletic meet of the Rokel Secondary School in Freetown, launched indiscriminate attacks on passerby and business houses along Syke Street, St. John Roundabout, Campbell Street and Sanders Street, among other areas.

Armed with knives and bottles, the rampaging youths threatened to stab and kill anyone who resisted their orders. In the event, they succeeded in robbing people of their mobile phones, hand bags and other valuable properties.

Unconfirmed reports have it that at least two car windscreens were smashed.

Had it not been for the timely intervention of the police, the situation could have deteriorated to disaster in the city as the pupils were well determined to unleash terror in the city.

The police had cause to fire at least three teargas canisters in order to disperse the defiant youths.

The situation was later put under control and normalcy returned again to the city, courtesy of the tireless efforts of the SLP. Four youths were arrested with dangerous weapons and they are presently helping the police with investigations.

This week started with reports that the Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation, Tamba Borbor Sawyer physically attacked a civil society activist, Fallah Ensah Ndama, in Buedu on flimsy grounds.

The victim is said to be suffering from serious pains as a result of the eight punches he received from the APC government minister, and the matter is being investigated by the police.

Following that, the Awareness Times investigated and confirmed that soldiers armed with guns, cutlasses and knives, stormed the Hamilton village at midnight and terrorized residents in that part of the country.

The incident that lasted for several hours left three people stabbed and hospitalized, and several others with serious injuries. Cars windscreens were smashed and residences were attacked and vandalized.

The rate at which violence is being perpetrated in the country is gradually becoming a cause for alarm and the exigency to curtail such occurrences cannot be overemphasized.
