The former Womenís Leader of the SLPP Western Area who served in that position from 2005 to 2008 when she voluntarily took a back seat in the SLPP after the party lost the 2007 Elections, has yesterday Wednesday February 2nd 2011, spoken exclusively to Awareness Times at her home in Kingtom, Freetown during which she insisted that she bears ďno malice and no grudgeĒ against the SLPP and also insisted that her resignation from the Party ďhas nothing, absolutely nothing to do with the just-ended Bo ConventionĒ as was insinuated in a local tabloid yesterday.
Speaking on the timing of her resignation, the charming and erudite Madam Janet Savage said she decided to resign at this point in time because she has ďfurther political ambitions in the horizonsĒ and did not want to be seen as ďserving two masters at the same timeĒ.
She insisted that for the past three to four years since the loss of the SLPP in September 2007, she had been an SLPP member ďin name onlyĒ. She confirmed that her former position as Western Area Womenís Leader had been long since filled several years ago by one Haja Rabi who is the substantive Western Area Womenís Leader of the SLPP. She lamented that the Standard Times newspaper erroneously gave the impression as if she was still the Freetown Womenís Leader at the time of her resignation from the party. She also revealed that the last time she served as an SLPP NEC delegate was in 2007 before the party lost. Following this, she insisted that she was no longer a delegate.

According to Madam Janet Savage, she has many cherished friends within the SLPP but she was now at a point in her life where she had to make a cut off from the SLPP. She then went on to highlight the reasons behind her decision to resign as firstly being, her maternal familial links to the current First Lady of the Republic, Madam Sia Nyama Koroma as well as the fact that her first marriage to a former APC Minister S.H.O. Gborie had caused her to be even closer to Sia Koroma who was a niece to the late APC Minister. She however insisted that it was not just the family ties but also the ďfantastic jobĒ that the President and First Lady were doing for the country that was behind her decision to work with them.
ďI have no malice and no grudge towards my former party. My resignation has nothing to do with any of the current issues within the SLPP and especially not the Bo Convention. I have nothing against John Benjamin who is doing his part in the SLPP but I decided that in light of the fantastic job that First Lady Sia Koroma and her husband, H.E. President Koroma are doing in transforming Sierra Leone for the better, that I should complement their efforts by teaming up with them and obviously I cannot do that from within the SLPP. I cannot serve two masters,Ē Janet Savage took her time to carefully explain.
Asked why she sent a copy of the letter to Standard Times, a newspaper that is usually not complimentary of the SLPP, Madam Janet Savage stated that it was with no mischief.
ďStandard Times office is just a stone throw from my house at Kingtom and since I wanted to publicise my resignation, I sent a copy to them. There was no mischievous intent. I have no grudge against the SLPP,Ē Madam Savage assured.
¬†ďI want to work with President Koroma and I cannot do that effectively from within the SLPP as an Opposition member. I do not want to be a hypocrite to my conscience,Ē she stated.
Madam Savage also explained that the reason why she sent her membership and expired year 2005 delegate cards back to the SLPP was because the cards ďbelong to the SLPP and it would have been indecent of me to keep them in my possessionĒ.
Continuing her chat with Awareness Times, Madam Janet Savage made a call for women of Sierra Leone to work even harder than ever to prove that when they are put in positions of authority, they can deliver just as well as the men so that ďone day Sierra Leone will get a female President we can all be proud ofĒ.
Meanwhile, SLPP sources indicate that the resignation of Madam Janet Savage from the SLPP has been accepted.
ďIt would have been nice for her to stay within the fold but the reality is that she had virtually left the party since the Year 2008 to go back to her late APC Minister husbandís party. Since Year 2008, she was only SLPP in name but not in action however we wish her well in her new political life,Ē one Western Area Constituency Chairman told this newspaper.
