PRESS RELEASE

ACC INTERCEPTS ELEVEN CONTAINERS LOADED FOR ILLEGAL EXPORT

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday 3rd February 2011 at around mid night intercepted eleven (11) containers loaded for illegal export at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Freetown.

This sting operation took place as a result of a tip-off received from a member of the public. The ACC immediately put together a Rapid Response Team that went to the Port.  The team opened the fifteen (15) containers that were ready for export and found eleven (11) of them containing timber.

During the operation, nine (9) officials from Customs, Sierra Leone Port Authority and a Shipping Agent were arrested.  Currently, the nine Suspects are helping the Commission with investigations. However, after spending the night under custody they have been granted bail to the tune of three hundred million Leones (Le 300,000,000) each with two Sureties in like sum.

It could be recalled that the government has imposed a ban on the export of timber from Sierra Leone.

The investigation continues.
