Step Mother Fries Stepchild Hands


A step mother Mariama Sesay of Orugu Village, Freetown is said to be in police custody following a gross inhuman treatment that she meted against her stepchild recently. According to reports, Mariama Sesay was frying some fish when she left the pot and went inside. On her return she discovered that one fish was missing. The step mother then summoned the step child who denied taking the fish. She tied the hands of the child and dipped them into the burning oil accusing her of lying. Two other suspects including the prime suspects husband Abdulai Sesay are also in custody helping with police investigation.


NAG Engages ACC


The National Accountability Group (NAG), a civil society dialogue forum geared towards promoting national issues on corruption past Wednesday met with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to seek further clarification on the NASSIT Ferries decision. The dialogue meeting was a result of series of concerns raised by Sierra Leoneans on the decision by the commission leading to a fine of Two billion leones levied on four NASSIT officials who were at the helm of affairs when the ferries were purchased.


Minister Blames Port Officials


The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security Dr. Sam Sesay has blamed the Sierra Leone Port Authority for the rampant exporting of our timber into neighbouring countries. He said the port management is not doing enough to forestall the rampant corruption that is going on at the quay adding that if they had been properly monitoring the quay such games would not have been happening there.


Inflation Rate Increases in December


Statistics Sierra Leone (SSL) has on 10th February 2011 December released  the 2010 Consumer Price Index (CPI) which showed that the December 2010 monthly inflation rate increased slightly. The report disclosed that the combined monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) for December 2010 increased from 154.21% in November to 157.15 in December 2010 resulting in a 1.91% increased in inflation rate for December. The increase in the price level for December 2010 was as a result of the increase in the cost of all main components of the index including food, clothing, housing and health among others.


Freetown Gets Another Stadium


Local tabloids have alleged that a brand new ultra modern stadium project is ongoing at the Milton Margai College in Freetown. According to reports, the site was chosen by the National Olympic Committee because the land is flat and will be good to serve the purpose. It is disclosed that the stadium when completed will comprise an artificial turf, an eight track athletic Facilities , a swimming pool amongst others.


St. Edwards Celebrates 89


The Saint Edward Secondary School over the weekend celebrated its 89 Anniversary at the school May Park ground in Freetown. The ceremony consisted of a march pass, flag raising and speech delivery by prominent Edwardians. The old boys of the school are said to have stressed the need for the school to continue to maintain discipline, quality education as the school seemed to be retrogressing.


Immigration Concludes Fake Travel Document Training


Sierra Leone Immigration Department recently concluded two-day training on the theme: Detection of Fraudulent Travel Document at the Barmoi Hotel, Aberdeen in Freetown. The officials were trained in the installation, set up and checking of various equipment as well as detection of forgery and identification card verification. Facilitators are said to have been drawn from the federal office of Immigration in Switzerland.


Lumley Beach, Now Fishing Ground


Local tabloids have it that the Sierra Leone natural beach, the Lumley, Aberdeen Beach is now utilized by fisher men. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture is accused of showing total neglect and abandon of the beach, since the demolition of some of the beach bars some few years ago by the ministry. According to reports, the Tourism Ministry had once promised to improve on the beach after the demolition of the individual native beach bar structures.
