SLPP Mourns Alhaji George as Bubuakei drags them to Court

In the wake of a legal matter filed against the party by one of its flagbearer aspirants, another sad occurrence has happened to the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP).

A founding member cum elder of the SLPP died on Wednesday 23rd February 2011 following a protracted illness.

All efforts by the SLPP to save the life of Alhaji Mohamed Tunde George, 81, proved unsuccessful, as he was called home by the creator of mankind a few days after he was discharged from the Choithram Hospital.

The Awareness Times has learnt that the SLPP fully supported the late man during the time of his illness by footing his one-week medical bills amounting to millions of Leones at the Choithram Hospital in Freetown.

Notwithstanding the fact that the party has a legal matter this morning at the Supreme Court, the body of the late man would be laid-out at the partys Wallace Johnson Street Headquarters this morning at around 8:00pm, the SLPP Executive informed the Awareness Times yesterday.

In an interview with the SLPP National Chairman and Leader, John Oponjo Benjamin, at his Wallace Johnson Street office, he described the death as a big loss to the SLPP.

Alhaji Mohamed Tunde George was a founding member of our party, John Benjamin said, adding that the late man was one of the committed members of the party.

He remained SLPP until his demise, the opposition leader said, while expressing satisfaction that the SLPP did it best to save the life of Pa George though it yielded no dividend.

The SLPP, Benjamin said, will sorely miss the late man, as, according to him, elders are a major pillar of the SLPP.

He however pointed out that the death of the late man at a time the party is facing a legal matter will unite the SLPP the more, rather than disintegrating it.

John Benjamin assured that the SLPP will fully participate in the funeral arrangement and ceremony as it did at the time of the illness.

Prayers would be offered for the late man at the Baitullah Mosque, Kennedy Street and internment would take place at the Oku Mohamadan Cemetery, Fourah Bay in Freetown.

At the SLPP Headquarters yesterday, executive members of the SLPP, aspirants, party loyalists and other members of the public made financial contributions towards supporting the funeral ceremony.

The Awareness Times Newspaper made a modest financial contribution, as according to the newspapers editor, Abdul Karim Kabia (Fonti), The late man used to be a very good friend of the Awareness Times Newspaper.

According to Fonti, the Awareness Times will always miss Pa George as he was almost always in touch with the office.

He always reads the Awareness Times and will immediately contact the office if the newspaper does not come out for a single day, Fonti said.

Meanwhile, the SLPP is due in court this morning for the legal suit filed by Bu-Buakei Jabbi, and the executive of the party has called on members of the party to witness the proceedings at the Supreme Court.

In memory of our late friend Alhaji George, the Awareness Times team is reproducing on Page 8 of todays edition, an archived Sept. 1st 2005 article by one of our erstwhile editors, Mr. David Jabati. It covers a humourous incident involving the late man at the Law Courts during the Supreme Courts Year 2005 Judgment delivery in the case of Hinga Norman vs. SLPP brought to the courts by Lawyer Bu-buakei Jabbi Esq.
