In Sierra Leone, Awareness Times Editor Bags National Award

Editor of the Awareness Times Newspaper is the recipient for the National Media Awards 2010 prize for Best Newspaper Columnist in Sierra Leone.

 

Abdul Karim Kabia (Fonti), being the youngest editor in Sierra Leone, 25, received this award on the night of Friday 25th January 2011, during the Fifth National Media Awards Night, organized by the Independent Media Commission (IMC) at the Lagoonda Entertainment Complex, Aberdeen in Freetown.

 

Fonti arrived at the Lagoonda Entertainment Complex to receive his national honour shortly after the announcement of the award and the beams of satisfaction over the acknowledgement of his good work were conspicuous on his face.

The best newspaper columnist award was presented to Fonti by the United Nations Secretary Generals Representative in Sierra Leone, His Excellency, Michael von der Schulenburg.

 

Fontis award prize consists of a certificate, a trophy plus one million leones.

 

At the same awards night, Awareness Times Makeni Correspondent, Mohamed Kabbah, received a certificate as the runner up in the best human rights reporting category.

This years award night in which over thirty awards were dished out to various outstanding journalists in the country was sponsored by the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM), Airtel, UNDP, UNFPA and UN Women.


The best newspaper columnist honour was accorded to Abdul Karim Kabia for an article titled Scorpions in Town. Other articles which were taken into consideration for the award include: City Police or City Thugs, Did Afsatu Kabba Deceive Herself Part One and Two, Should We Accept the New Education System, Christiana Bull Frustrates Information Minister, and SLBC Must Provide Answers. All of the aforementioned articles and more were published in various Newspapers including The African Champion, Awareness Times, Independent Observer, The Exclusive, Sierra Express Media, Spectator, Standard Times, New Vision, Atomic, Unity, and Global Times, under Fontis freelance column titled Roaming Pen.

They were also published online at the Patriotic Vanguard Website, Cocorioko Website, New People Online, Rising Sun and several other online outlets.

 

Editor Fonti has expressed elation over what he described as acknowledgement of a worthy venture.


I dedicate this award to three special people in my life: Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden, my inspirational boss, Christiane Patricia Koroma, my caring and understanding fiance, and Sylvia Rugiatu Patricia Kabia, my beautiful and angelic daughter, Fonti said shortly after receiving the award, while thanking all the media institutions for publishing his opinion pieces and commentaries.
