The Sierra Leone Airport Authority (SLAA) has embarked on robust infrastructural development project in the Lungi International Airport, Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom, Port Loko District and the Aberdeen Helipad in Freetown.

This was revealed to newsmen during the Aberdeen and Lungi construction projects handing over ceremonies to the MODCOM Construction Company.

The ceremony took place on Tuesday 1st March 2011.

In his statement, General Manager for Sierra Leone Airport Authority (SLAA), Mr. John Sesay noted that the construction of the respective heliports is a component of the Airport Transfer Project (ATP) funded by Investment Climate Facility (ICF).

He revealed that the project is being undertaken and supervised by MODCOM and International Consulting Services (ICS) respectively.

The Airport General Manager said the budget for the entire project stands at $5,000,000.00, adding that the SLAA is contributing $200,000.00 as counterpart fund.

According to him, SLAA is also undertaking a project for the rehabilitation of the Airport runway which is being handled an Irish firm called Lagan Construction Company. Funds for the said project were provided by the World Bank.

He continued that the project is aimed at resurfacing the runway, widening and strengthening the turning loops, relocating the aircraft holding positions and providing illuminated wind socks.

Sesay pointed out that airport runway rehabilitation project is valued at $12.9 million, noting that SLAA is paying 10% of this sum as counterpart fund.

He furthered that the project which is being supervised and managed by Arab Consulting Engineers (ACE) is about 50% complete and is expected to be completed by the end of March this year.

He used the forum as an opportunity to explain that SLAA is presently undertaking series of infrastructural works ranging from the provision of Nav-Aid and communication equipment, construction of a heliport in Lungi and Aberdeen, to modification of terminal building, all aimed at giving the country airport an international facelift.

Project Director, Airport Transfer Project, Mr. Hindold Sheka revealed that the construction of a standard heliport in Aberdeen and Lungi will attract tourists and investors, adding that it will also ease the challenges associated with travelling.

Project Manager Lagan Construction Company, Mr. Vikish Singh, assured the government and the people of Sierra Leone that his company will ensure the best in the project.
