The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has ended a days seminar at the Holy Trinity Hall in Kenema. The seminar held on Thursday 24th February 2011 had as it theme: Problems and challenges in achieving the lofty dreams of the 6-3-3-4 system of education in Sierra Leone.

Gbessay Amadu, Ag. Vice Principal of the Eastern Polytechnic ably chaired the forum.

In his statement, Amadu lauded the participants drawn from various schools for gracing the seminar in their numbers, while urging them to make meaningful inputs.

He thanked WAEC for opening its eastern regional office in Kenema, which he said will alleviate the stress and challenges of school authorities traveling to Bo and Freetown for documentation.

Head of WAEC National Office, Mr. Mohamed Sheriff Sapateh, said WAEC was established by law to conduct all public exams both at national and international levels. He added that the institution is also responsible for awarding certificates to deserving examination candidates.

Sapateh said the seminar was aimed at granting participants an opportunity to ask relevant question and make meaningful contributions towards the progress of the institution.

He said WAEC will soon conduct trial tests for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and National Primary School Examination (NPSE) pupils, prior to the actual exams. This, according to him, is in order to assess the ability of the pupils ahead of the exams.

A paper on the theme was presented by Mohamed Gendemeh, Dean of Faculty of Education and Community Development Studies, Eastern Polytechnic in Kenema.

Statements were made by Tamba George Moseray, Head of Research Unit, WAEC, Peter Thomas, Deputy Director in charge of basic education.
