As Sierra Leonean women join their counterparts the world over to commemorate International Womens Day, Awareness Times Newspaper has decided to profile one among the numerous women of substance in Sierra Leone.

The global theme for this years commemoration centers around science and technology Equal access to education, training and science and technology: pathway to decent work for women.

In that regard, the ensuing profile is that of a Sierra Leonean woman who has distinguished herself in the area of science and technology.

WHO IS SHE?

From FSSG Primary to St. Josephs Convent; A science sixth form student who completed a BSc Combined Science - Chemistry and Biochemistry in the United Kingdom and graduated in 1983 with honours from Brighton University.  She read her first Masters in Biochemistry from Chelsea College, University of London in 1984 and got married to a PhD Chemistry holder in 1985.

Family upbringing became her life as she read

- Masters in Virology University of Liverpool

- Post Graduate Module in Epidemiology and Medical Statistics London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

She has confirmed that having a family should not put a ceiling on your academic/professional pursuits. After having three children - two boys and a girl - our woman of substance embarked on a PhD programme in Virology (Viral Epidemiology), University of Portsmouth and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2005, the only woman in Sierra Leone with that depth in Medical Science.

Her name is Dr (Mrs) Isatta Alpha Wurie.  She was the Director, Laboratory Services, Ramsy Medical Laboratories for twenty years; worked at the Medical Research Council in Banjul, The Gambia before becoming an International Consultant to the revered Centre for Disease Control (CDC) Atlanta, USA, Global AIDs Program as Associate Director, Laboratory Services for Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

Dr (Mrs) Isatta Alpha Wurie won Woman of Excellence as the Best Woman Medical Scientist in Africa in 2004.  This year she was recognised by the Nigerian Governments Laboratory Regulatory Body for Distinguished Service Award graced with a plaque dated 10th December 2010.

Yesterday Wednesday 9th March 2011, she left the shores of Sierra Leone to serve as Technical Advisor in the launching of the first African Society of Laboratory Medicine Conference in Addis Abba, Ethiopia.

This woman of substance is indeed a modest Sierra Leonean, well grounded in family values, as she serves at the pinnacle of Medical Science.
