Sierra Leone Road Transport Authoritys (SLRTA) Eastern Regional Vehicle Examiner, Athur Brima, has given a one month ultimatum to heavy duty vehicle owners in that part of the country in order for them to maintenance their vehicles.

At an emergency meeting with the vehicle owners on Wednesday 2nd March 2011 at his Blama Road office, Brima warned the heavy duty vehicle owners to properly maintenance their vehicles within the ultimatum period.

Any heavy duty vehicle, including trucks, tippers and trailers that flout this instruction would be declared not road worthy, he declared.

The meeting in question was summoned to map out strategies in order to reduce the high rates of heavy vehicle accidents in the Kenema city and its environs.

In just one month, we have recorded more than four tipper accidents in Kenema, he pointed out.

According to him, most of the heavy vehicle accidents are caused by defectiveness of the vehicles including poor break system, smooth tyres and engine malfunction.

He emphasized the must for the vehicles to undergo proper maintenance, as according to him, the SLRTA will not hesitate to enforce provisions of the Ro
ad Traffic Ordinance Act of 1952.

The SLRTA has the powers to impound any defective vehicle, he pointed out.

Chairman of Tipper Drivers in Kenema appealed to the vehicle examiner to excises patience, as according to him, We are prepared to properly maintenance our vehicles but we need enough time.

Ibrahim Turay attributed the high rate of tipper accidents to the lack of guarantee spear parts in the country and to what he described as the reckless manner in which commercial motorbike riders ply the routes.

According to him, the countrys spear parts market is full of fake vehicle spear parts that last for only two to three months in most cases.

We are faced with the serious challenges with regards the maintenance of our vehicles since the spear parts are fake, he said, while assuring the vehicle examiner of their maximum cooperation at all times.
