As Wanton Destruction, Abuse & Desecration visited on his home... APC Regime Disappoints Freetown Lawyer

A currently dejected and disappointed Freetown Lawyer James Blyden Jenkins-Johnston has written an Open Letter to His Excellency the President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma who is also the Constitutional Fountain of Justice in Sierra Leone. In the letter, Jenkins-Johnston protests to the Koroma Government with what he described as a heavy heart and tears in my eyes over what he alleges to be the unlawful entry upon and the wanton destruction, abuse and desecration visited upon the Family Home of The Jenkins-Johnston Family at 17 and 17A Murray Town Road in Freetown on the 30th and 31st March 2011 by persons alleging themselves to be doing the work of the Government of Sierra Leone.

It will be recalled that a few weeks ago on 24th January 2011, the same Lawyer Jenkins Johnston had published an Opinion in which he had lambasted the Government for trampling upon the constitutional rights of property owners along Wilkinson Road. Well, Jenkins-Johnston, in his current letter, states the following to the President:- Your Excellency, at the time I wrote that piece in January 2011, little did I know or realize that the worst aspect of what I was talking about would be visited upon our Family in such a devastating way just two(2) months down the line.

According to Jenkins Johnston who said his parents moved into that house when he was just a 15 years old boy, the said property was abruptly marked with an X for demolition on March 14th 2011 even though the property was not located along the main Wilkinson Road. At that point, he recounted how he made representation to the appropriate authorities asking for adequate compensation but he never received a response until the evening of March 30th 2011 when his family members were rudely interrupted by a huge bulldozer breaking down their entire frontage whilst the family was inside the house. He insists that no notice was given to the family by the authorities and that the operators of the bulldozers simply responded when queried that they were doing the work of the Government.

The sight that greeted me left me in tears, Jenkins Johnston wrote of his first glimpse of the destruction that used to be his late mothers beloved Hedgerow Plants as well as seeing the Front perimeter fence and gate being no longer in existence thus exposing his family to thieves, vandals, trespassers, passers-by and anyone who cares to enter thereon.

He also reported of how his sisters AKWABA Boutique shop was now inaccessible causing her loss of business without any form of notice given to her.

Jenkins Johnston then goes on to quote various Enacted Laws with a reminder of Section 21.(1) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone which makes it clear that No Property shall be compulsorily acquired without prompt payment of adequate compensation.

Is this how peaceful and Law-abiding citizens should be treated? the dejected lawyer asked of the calamity that had befallen his family whilst adding a lamentation thus: What a sad day for all of us in this our beloved country.

More details of the Jenkins-Johnston Letter and the dejected lawyers mood during our 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations will be published subsequently. STAY TUNED.
