URGENT CONCERNS OF STUDENTS AT NJALA CAMPUS

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

NJALA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS UNION
NJALA CAMPUS

Cell numbers: 033 736568/076 669971

The Vice Chancellor and Principal

Njala University

Njala Campus Office

Dear Sir,

URGENT CONCERNS OF STUDENTS AT NJALA CAMPUS

In connection with our proposed meeting scheduled on the 1st April, 2011, which did not take place, I wish to bring your administrations attention to the following regrettable happenings in the University which are all very much important to our collective efforts in making Njala University the apex of academia in this country.

As a responsible Students Union Government, that ascended to power based on the principles and virtue of maximizing students welfare at Njala Universitys private advantage, it would be a disservice to my colleagues and to all those who contributed tirelessly in making me form this government of hope.

Therefore, I am cocksure you would be in full gear to look into the following grievances or burning issues before the victims can go beyond control:

STUDENTS ID CARDS;

You will agree with me that every registered student pays a sum of Le15, 000 for simple identification cards which were supposed to have been available since October but uptill now there are no signs of such and we have got no information from the Registry about it. Therefore, my administration condemns this act and refers to it as corruption.

COMPUTER FEES;

Every student of this University pays a huge sum of Le 150,000 per annum for ICT, which I describe as an unfortunate situation because since I entered Njala University, I have never set eyes on a simple mouse, yet alone sit in a class where there is computer connection for teaching. Therefore, I request tangible explanation to this unfortunate story.

SOCKET WORKS PROJECT;

Again, there are supporting evidence that some percentage of students has paid for this facility but in an official meeting with Socket Works Executives, the Finance Director reportedly denied this and claimed the Students Union Government has bared students from paying the said amount, which I describe as false and a malicious attack on my administration. I have gone all out to cajole students about the sockets works programme and the impact it will have on the growth of the University. Therefore, such an embarrassing statement proved total disregard to the Unions efforts in making this technological innovation possible.

ABRUPT INCREMENT IN REGISTRATION FEES FOR SLG HOLDERS;

In a meeting dated 11th November, 2010 with the following administrators in the University:

1.     The Registrar, Mr. Aly Turay

2.     The DVC, NU/NC, Prof.  A. A. Baimba

3.     The Dean of Students,NU, Miss Christiana O. Clarkson

4.     Deputy  Senior Assistant Registrar, Mr. Raymond Katta

It was vividly decided by the Registrar that legal holders of SLG should be allowed to register on the same amount of Le105, 000 since there were some administrative lapses in defending the added amount. Therefore, it is a very big embarrassment for the Finance Office to again request students to pay an imposed amount contrary to our past agreement.

I therefore, move a motion against this act of untimely and unjustifiable imposition of extra fees on the students in a first class University which is not a primary school at all.

COMPLETION OF THE UNIVERSITY RADIO STATION;

In several Universities like Iowa state, Ahmadu Bello, George Washington, Makerere, etc, their mission is to help students make a positive change in their lives, in their career, and in their world. You will agree with me that a University where students representatives are completely docile has a slow dying system. Therefore, with reference to a meeting with the Hon. Minister of Education and the Hon. Minister of Information, they bluntly told us that everything pertaining to the completion of the station at Njala is in place and that it is left to the University administration and the contractors to make it available to us during the second semester. Hence students want to know the status quo of the station.

UNIVERSITY CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS STUDENTS INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL ACTIVITIES;

You probably might not be aware of the legitimacy of every administration of higher institutions to happily fund all students Union elections and ensure that democracy is practiced by their students in all spheres of their activities.

Therefore, it was not a begging letter sent to your office few weeks ago to pay the required capitation fees of every registered student to enable us actively participate in the forthcoming National Union of Sierra Leone Students Annual Convention scheduled to take place from the 8th -10th April 2011.

Hence, refusing to pay this capitation fees for every fully registered student of this campus means you have rejected the principles of democracy. Therefore, we need your office to properly consider this and disburse the said capitation on time.

RUSTICATION OF SOME STUDENTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY;

You will agree with me that a university is a place where dreams come true; a place where hard work and intelligence are all that matters to excel; a place where the focus is on serving students and supporting staff. Therefore, whatever affects Njala University unfairly has an odd impact on our individual endeavours as students and whatever d
