Mr. Berewa: Warning SLPP members |
Erstwhile Vice President of the Republic of Sierra Leone has slammed the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), over the party’s current intra-party violence that continues unabated.
Mr. Solomon Ekuma Berewa, aka Solo-B, who served as the SLPP Flagbearer during the 2007 Presidential Election, did not mince his words while criticizing his party at a ceremony held in the southern city of Bo on Saturday 30th April in honour of the late Sir Milton Margai.
Â
Berewa expressed frustration over what he described as the wicked moves being made by certain members of the SLPP to drag the good image of the party into disrepute.
Â
“It is sad to note that the party that was widely known to be peaceful and united is now associated with violence,” the former VP said, noting that the news of violence being perpetrated by SLPP members against fellow members is devastating.
The SLPP elder said the party has demonstrated total flippancy at a time when it should be busy mapping out viable strategies to contest and win the forthcoming 2012 general elections. He made public that the SLPP will not win the 2012 elections if it maintains it current “frivolous status”.
Â
Solomon Berewa strictly warned SLPP members who are not working in the interest of the party to desist forthwith or face the wrath of the party’s founding fathers.
“The founding fathers of the SLPP, who were very modest, tolerant, peaceful and honest will surely not allow a few hoodlums to destroy the party’s image,” Berewa maintained.
Â
He advised the party members to emulate the footsteps of Sir Milton Margai and take the SLPP to victory.
Berewa however assured the people of Bo that the party will soon conduct the flagbearership election.
Â
“If I was violent, or if SLPP was a violent party, Ernest Koroma would not have been in power by now and this country would have been plunged into war,” Berewa said, adding that violence bears no good fruit.
Â
The former statesman also used the forum as an opportunity to advise all politicians in authority to go for results and not popularity.
Â
“In all my life in public office, my overriding agenda was to achieve positive results,” the veteran politician said.
Â
He cautioned politicians that power does not last forever, thus the need for them to be wary of how they serve the people.
Â
He recalled that several people befriended him while he was in power. “Today, all of them have vanished,” he disclosed.
Solomon Berewa assured that he will always remain SLPP. He said it is a shame on members of the party who have abandoned the party for selfish reasons.
