In Sierra Leone, Another Scandal Rocks Jubilee Committee

The latest scandal surrounding the countrys 50th independence anniversary celebration is the failure of the anniversary committee to pay the musicians that performed during the six days beach carnival that was held in Freetown.

Sierra Leonean born hip-hop musician residing in the United States of America (USA), Kao Denero, is among the musicians who were contracted by a sub-committee of the 50th independence anniversary committee entertainment committee to perform at the aforementioned event for agreed sums.

Kao-Denero agreed to come to Sierra Leone to perform at the show, after an agreement to pay the artist Five Thousand United States Dollars was reached.

The hip-hop star, like several others, is presently disappointed that the agreed sum was never paid to him, notwithstanding the fact that he had fulfilled his own part of the contract.

Chairman of the Entertainment Committee, Abubakarr Konteh aka DJ Boxx has confirmed that the committee indeed signed the aforementioned contract with Kao Denero and other musicians, both local and international.

DJ Boxx told the Awareness Times in an interview on Tuesday 24th May 2011 that he was contacted by the jubilee committee to present an entertainment budget for the Lumley Beach carnival.

The budget was to include contracts signed with both local and internal musicians slated to perform in the show, he explained, noting that he later presented a budget of One Billion, One Hundred and Seventy Six Million Leones, which includes travelling, lodging, feeding and payments to all the artists slated to grace and make the show a reality.

According to him, an initial payment of Six Hundred and Sixty Five Million Leones was disbursed to him by the committee after the budget was approved.

I used the said sum to make part payments to some of the musicians that participated in the show, Boxx explained, adding that the jubilee committee had promised that the remaining sum would be disbursed to him after the show.

He furthered that the committee was yet to disburse the remaining money to him, which, according to him, was responsible for the current scandal.

The entertainment committee did not only have to pay musicians including Kao Denero, but the committee is also owing youth clubs, organizations and school pupils, who participated in the peace match on independence day, Boxx explained, while pointing out that he was still pursuing the jubilee committee to disburse the remaining money. I am presently under considerable pressure from the managers and promoters of international musicians including those from Nigeria, who are still in the country awaiting their money, Boxx disclosed, while apologizing to the victims for the unfortunate scenario.

He called on the affected musicians to continue to exercise patience, and be rest assured of getting their money.

Earlier, Chairman of the Jubilee Committee, Cecil Magbelay-Fyle, disclosed that the Committee was only trying to clear some doubts it had with the entertainment committee, and assured that the issue would be resolved as quick as possible.
