APC's Trauma Over Buedu Defeat
By Augustine Samba (Just from Buedu)

Officials of the All Peoples Congress (APC) party left the eastern township of Buedu in a traumatized state following the parliamentary bye-election defeat it suffered in Constituency 04, Kissy Tongi Chiefdom, Kailahun District.

Earlier, the APC stormed the Kailahun District in a twenty-one-vehicle convoy headed by Vice President Sam Sumana and three government ministers ahead of the just concluded bye-election. According to reports monitored, the enthusiastic APC team spent over five hundred million leones during the campaign and the failure of the spending spree to yield any dividend witnessed the APC officials sneaking out of the Kailahun District in a frustrated mood.

Meanwhile, the SLPP team headed by John Oponjo Benjamin, which spent far less than fifty million leones in the entire campaign, has been widely hailed for the massive feat it recorded over the APC. Though Kailahun is widely believed to be an SLPP stronghold, it remained a fact that the APC polled high votes in the Kissi Tongi Chiefdom during the 2007 general elections as a result of the influence of an APC strongman known as Tamba Juana.

In Constituency 03 in the Kissy Tongi Chiefdom for example, SLPPs Musa Tamba Sam polled less than 50% of the votes in that area to be elected as MP, whilst the rest was shared among APC, PMDC and NDA during the 2007 parliamentary election, notwithstanding the fact that the SLPP was in power by then. This is more the reason why the John Benjamin led team has been highly commended for subjecting the APC to a total state of trauma.

A typical example of the trauma that griped the APC team was evidenced in the actions of Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation, Tamba Borbor Sawyer, who went on the rampage in Buedu and started humiliating elders and women indiscriminately.

Sawyer was spotted during the campaign period moving helter skelter accusing people of not supporting the APC. Using a very loud microphone and parading the Buedu Township, the Deputy Minister bitterly voiced out that the people in the Chiefdom had received bribes from the APC party but are refusing to give the party what he described as the required support.

Sawyer described the people as ungrateful, as according to him, he has been very generous to the people but they are refusing to back his new party.

Borbor Sawyer was bitter that his large following during the time he was representing the SLPP in that part of the country has suddenly vanished following his appointment as Deputy Minister in the APC government.

Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) Womens Leader for Constituency 04, Mariama Lavalie bitterly complained to the Awareness Times that the Deputy Minister directly insulted her.

Borbor Sawyer publicly humiliated me at the Buedu Park. He accused me that I received from his the proceeds of a big farm he cultivated but refused to support the APC, Lavalie explained, adding He even went further to tell the crowd that I was his girlfriend but he has dumped me because he is now a born-again Christian.

SLPP Councilor Badara Konneh also complained that the APC Deputy Minister severally accused him of destroying the relationship between the Kissi people and the Islamic Komende people.

In the open, Tamba Borbor Sawyer described the Councilor as a poor man residing in a makeshift structure in Buedu.

Responding to the public humiliation he was subjected to, the Councilor told the Awareness Times Borbor Sawyer has no house nor any fix abode in the Kissi Tongi Chiefdom.

Borbor Sawyer also openly chastised one Sia Tamba describing her as ungrateful.

He boasted in public that he was the one who transformed the lady from a petty trader in groundnut selling to an improved business woman. According to the APC Deputy Minister, he gave the lady Le500,000 as business capital. I regret ever giving her that sum because she has refused to join the APC despite several persuasions, Sawyer explained.

Another victim of the Borbor Sawyer insults was one Pugewa Sengu, who was described by Sawyer as a disgrace to the Sengu family.

According to Sawyer, the majority of the Sengu family including Paramount Chief Sahr Kallon Nyuma Sengu IV has pitched tent with the APC but Pugewa reluctantly remains SLPP.

SLPP Constituency 04 Chairman, Mr. Augustine Fungor also received his share from the Borbor Sawyer insult basket.

He openly described the Kissi people as stupid because of their refusal to support APC.

Meanwhile, a senior APC functionary confided in the Awareness Times that the biggest regret of the APC at present is the fact that they are now left with what he described as a liability called Tamba Borbor Sawyer.
