This article authored by Sylvia Olayinka Blyden and first published last week is being reproduced in the wake of this weekís reaction to it by Dr. Sama Banya. Dr. Banya's own¬†reaction to it,¬†will be handled separately at a much, much,¬†later date.
From enquiries I received yesterday, I was rather surprised at the number of people who were ignorant of the fact that Kailahunís Kissi Parliamentarian Hon. Musa Tamba Sam of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) went into Parliament under the SLPP ticket with barely 40% of the votes cast in Kailahunís Constituency 03 during the 2007 Elections.¬† According to official elections results, almost 60% of voters rejected Musa Sam & SLPP as their Parliamentarian & Party and instead cast their votes for the APC, PMDC and NDA Candidates.
I have also read the opinions by both Jonathan Leigh (Independent Observer) and Dr. Sama Banya (Puawui) on the issue of SLPPís presence in Kailahunís Kissi land. They both serve to unwittingly misinform the public of the enormous feat that the John Benjamin led SLPP performed last weekend in Kailahunís Kissi land that saw the SLPP score 1,953 votes to the APCís 1,285 votes (Ratio of 60.32% to 39.68% for the two parties totaled votes). So, in order to help dispel whatever myth might be floating in the air about the performance of the SLPP last weekend, I will humbly oblige with some factual analysis.
All the following elections facts are culled from official National Electoral Commission Data of August 2007.

Total Votes Cast = 9,986 votes
2007 VOTES FOR CONSTITUENCY 07 (John Benjaminís Hometown)
FALEY, Robin E. (SLPP) = 18,118
SESAY, Ivy (PMDC) = 982

HON. MUSA TAMBA SAM
As can be seen above, in the 2007 Parliamentary Elections, out of a total of 9,986 votes cast in the Kissi Constituency 03 of Kailahun District, the SLPPís Hon. Musa Sam only got 4,114 votes giving him a total of a little over 40% of the Votes with the remaining almost¬† 60% of the ballots being cast not for him. In other words, during the 2007 Presidential & Parliamentary Elections when SLPP was the party in Government, Kailahunís Constituency 03 in Kissi Kingdom, only voted 40% for the SLPPís Hon. Musa Tamba Sam.
HON. ROBIN FALLEY
This is in sharp contrast to John Benjaminís Segbwema hometown Constituency 07 in the same Kailahun District. In 2007, the SLPPís Hon. Robin Falley entered Parliament with 18,118 (91%) of the 19,913 valid votes cast.
KAILAHUN WAS NOT ALL GREEN
Because of figures like those scored by Hon. Robin Falley, it is always easy for the ill-informed like my dear brother, Jonathan Leigh of Independent Observer, to assume that all of Kailahun was bright green in 2007 but as I have now educated, this is not true. As aforementioned, some 60% of SLPPís Hon. Musa Tamba Samís people in Kissi land rejected him in 2007. He barely scraped into Parliament and God alone knows what will happen to him come 2012 Elections.
KISSI TONGIíS CONSTITUENCY 04
This now brings me to the recently contested seat of Constituency 04 in the same Kissi Land where Hon. Musa Tamba Sam hails from. During the 2007 Elections, when the SLPP was in power, Hon. Tamba Borbor Sawyer, who was then representing SLPP, scored ONLY 61% OF THE VOTES CAST. (i.e: 7,109 of 11,569 total votes). The APCís Victor Sengu won some 24% of the valid votes and the PMDCís Bockarie Kendor scored 7% with CPP and NDA sharing the balance valid votes.
APCíS FOOTHOLD IN KISSI TONGI
As can be seen, even in 2007 when the SLPP was in power, the APC, by winning almost 2,500 votes in Constituency 04, had a VERY FIRM foothold in Kissi Tongiís Constituency 04; a far better foothold than even the PMDC.
MUSA T. SAM vs. TAMBA BORBOR SAWYER
Infact, my Ďintelligence sourcesí tell me the APC had an option to use either Hon. Musa Tamba Sam or Hon. Tamba Borbor Sawyer in their recent gimmick but since in Year 2007, the APC had scored 18% of valid votes in Musa Tamba Samís Constituency 03 as compared to the APCís very significant 24% of valid votes in Tamba Borbor Sawyerís Constituency 04, it was expedient that the experiment should be conducted in Constituency 04 rather than Constituency 03. Dr. Sama Banya seems to be baffled as to the choice of Constituency 04 for the APCís recent experiment. Hope he now understands better. It was in Constituency 04 that the APC polled the highest percentage of valid votes within Kailahun District during the 2007 Elections where they won almost 2,500 votes cast.
MUSA T. SAM & KISSI TENGíS P.C. ELECTIONS
There are those who might wonder if Hon. Musa Sam could have been pliable to the political Ďlaboratory experimentí that the APC conducted with Hon. Tamba Borbor Sawyer as Ďlaboratory mouseí. Only God has the answer but when one recalls how Hon. Musa Tamba Sam was suddenly given an air ticket and per diem allowance to travel out of Sierra Leone during the height of campaigns for last yearís hotly contested Paramount Chief Elections in Kissi Teng Chiefdom which the ĎAPC candidateí won over the ĎSLPP candidateí, then one can draw conclusions. Hon. Musa Tamba Sam, like many Pa.O.Pa Squad members, is an interesting character to say the least.
DR. BANYAíS MENTION OF ďFIERYĒ HON. SAM
In the case of Dr. Sama Banya mentioning Hon. Samís Constituency 03 as a no-go land for anti-SLPP forces, he was just playing clever with semantics rather than stating the fact that the SLPPís ďfieryĒ Hon. Musa Tamba Sam won only a paltry 41% of the total votes in his Constituency 03 in Year 2007 showing that far more of Musa Tamba Samís constituents preferred the APC, PMDC and NDA to Hon. Musa Tamba Samís own representation of them.
JONATHAN LEIGHíS ANALYSIS
My brother Jonathan Leigh made a valiant effort to analyse the results but being hindered by his ignorance of the facts, his conclusions were erroneous. Now, if Jonathan Leigh truly wants to analyse the outcome of last weekís elections he should first appraise himself of the aforementioned electoral facts and then he would realise the yeoman feat that John Benjamin led opposition SLPP achieved in Kailahun last weekend over the Ernest Koroma led incumbent APC.
PROPERLY ANALYSING CONSTITUENCY 04
Factually, in Year 2007, SLPP won 61% of the total parliamentary elections votes cast in Constituency 04 when they (SLPP) were in Governance. Again, four years later, in Year 2011, with the APC in governance and APC expending hundreds of millions of leones and the power of incumbency, the SLPP again easily won over 60% of the total votes cast for the 2 partiesí candidates.
I hope members of the public will now properly put into context the outcome of last weekend elections results in Constituency 04. The outcome was a significant blow to the ruling Ernest Bai Koroma led All Peoples Congress and a solid vote of confidence in the ability of the John Benjamin led Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) to maintain their ground inside Kailahun District despite the tremendous power of APCís incumbency and APCís 99 tactics shenanigans.
CONGRATS TO THE JOHN BENJAMIN TEAM!!
Congratulations are definitely due to all members of the SLPP but especially so to the National Chairman & Leader, John Oponjo Benjamin, to Ambassador Patrick Foyah, Eastern Regional Chairman, to Joseph Maada Kpulun, Southern Regional Chairman and last but certainly not least, to the indefatigable SLPP Chairman of Kailahun District Branch, the Great Albert Jambai. I salute you all for making our democratic culture such a vibrant one to observe & report on. You deserve the Congratulations SLPP!! Keep the Fire burning!!!
