Sierra Leone's OGI Taking Lawmakers to the People

Sierra Leoneans from across the board have prepared themselves to engage their leaders at both central and local government levels through a constructive dialogue forum organized by the Open Government Initiative (OGI) secretariat in the Office of the President State House Freetown.

The forum is scheduled for this morning of Friday 15th July 2011 at the Chamber of Parliament at Tower Hill, Freetown, on the theme; bringing the people to the lawmakers.

Participants ranging from President Ernest Bai Koroma, the media, civil society organizations, Members of Parliament, mayors, district council chairmen and chiefdom representatives from the one hundred fouty-nine chiefdoms in Sierra Leone are now converging at the Chamber of Parliament in Freetown where they are expected to engage their representatives in governance constructively.

The OGI parliamentary forum with national representations is being held to boost accountability and transparency of the legislature, the executive and the judiciary, as well as improving on the relationship between the electorates and their representatives in governance. During the forum, participants would be discussing with their MPs about the development issues of their various communities as well as know the relationship between the MPs and their electorate.

The overall objective of the dialogue forum is to foster perfect relationship between elected representatives from constituencies, districts, cities and wards, whiles improving on the level of understanding of citizens roles and responsibilities, in democratic governance and that of parliamentarians, mayors and district council chairmen.

The OGI has raised the level of public awareness about its operations, citizens participations in governance by soliciting public views about how people want to be represented in government at every level. Barely fortnight ago, OGI held a town hall forum in the Mountain Rural district, in the Western Area where participants were addressed by President Ernest Bai Koroma on diverse developmental issues.
