Our Long Suffering Honourable Judges & Judiciary

Yesterday July 19th 2011 at around 14:15GMT, the Honourable Chief Justice Umu-Hawa Tejan-Jalloh read out her Ruling in the matter of Bu-Buakei Jabbi Esq. versus the SLPP and this Ruling was unanimously agreed to by her four colleagues on the Supreme Court Bench, Hon. Justice Maitland Emeric Tolla-Thompson(JSC), Hon. Justice Patrick Omolade Hamilton(JSC), Hon. Justice Shainieh Bash-Taqi(JSC) and Hon. Justice Vivian M. Solomon(JA).

Shortly after she read out the unanimous Ruling to throw out and dismiss Dr. Bu-Buakei Jabbis case against the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) with Costs to be paid by Jabbi to the Judiciary Treasury, the learned counsel for the SLPP, Ansu B. Lansana Esq. expressed his deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to the Five Honourable Judges on behalf of the SLPP and the other three Defendants. When the Judges rose to leave the Court, the jam-packed Courtroom which was full of SLPP members, gave a loud roar of approval for the Judges and thunderous clapping took over the Courtroom even as the overwhelmed Court Clerk and Bailiffs tried to restore Silence back to the Court.

The jubilant and grateful scene was a very far cry from the scene on the evening of February 28th 2011 when SLPP members had hurled invectives at the Supreme Court and questioned the integrity of the Sierra Leone Judiciary in the print and electronic media. The poor members of the Judiciary were subjected to humiliating descriptions they certainly did not deserve!  Indeed, the Judiciary, from ages past, is conservative and does not get into media wars but it should now be instructive on us all that our Judiciary has been long suffering in silence even as undue insults are thrown at them.

When Afsatu Kabba was convicted under a cloud, some people hailed Justice Ademusu. When the same Judge listened to Alieu Sesay and threw out that case, the very same people lampooned him. When SLPP got slammed an injunction as requested by Bu-Buakei Jabbi, the Judiciary was viciously torn apart in a most unwarranted manner by persons; some of whom should have known better! However, when the SLPP is relieved of the injunction and Bu-Buakei Jabbi is ordered to pay costs of Le5,000,000, sudeenly the same people are clapping for the Judiciarys wisdom.

Members of the Judiciary are certainly NOT perfect and indeed, some attention might be needed to be paid to certain areas so as to improve on service delivery within the Judiciary but honestly, let me use this opportunity to state that even though our Judiciary has been long suffering in silence, some of us deeply appreciate the role they are playing in this country even as they are being paid a shameful pittance as their salaries.

May God continue to guide and bless our countrys Judiciary and may this country, especially the President and the Parliamentarians, soon see the need to significantly increase the salaries and remuneration for our Honourable Judges as soon as possible. May God Bless the Chief Justice and all members of the Bench for their patience with us Sierra Leoneans; an ungrateful and forgetful populace. Amen.
