Leone Stars need patriots not partisans!

The imbroglio currently brewing between the Sports Ministry and the Sierra Leone Football Association SLFA is a serious cause for concern. This bad blood must be diagnosed now otherwise millions of Sierra Leone football fans will feel hurt and disappointed.

In the event where FIFA, the world soccer governing body, unleashes their cast-iron hammer on our darling Leone Stars, i.e. banning them from future football competitions, do you know the effect this would have on Sierra Leones economic/political sphere?

The Awareness Times is convinced that the confusion between the Sports Ministry and SLFA will jeopardise the September 4, 2011 qualifying match between Leone Stars and Egypt in Freetown for the 2012 African Nations Cup contest in Gabon/Equatorial Guinea.

It all started a couple of months ago when Sports Minister Paul Kamara appointed Swedish coach Mr Olof Mattsson as Leone Stars Head Coach, thereby relegating SLFAs approved Sierra Leonean coach Mr Christian Cole.

This problem has captivated the attention of FIFA which prompted a letter warning the Sports Ministry from usurping the powers of SLFA as FIFA only recognises football associations of countries to organise football. But FIFA, in the same letter, advised our Sports Ministry and SLFA to work together in the spirit of patriotism!

We cannot understand why these two gladiators cannot work together. Minister Paul Kamara means well for the progress of Leone Stars but we believe he was hasty in appointing Coach Olof Mattsson. Mr Kamara became Sports Minister when Leone Stars was doing well under Christian Cole. We believe he should have given Christian Cole an ultimatum: Qualify Leone Stars for 2012 and you will keep the job, otherwise youre fired!

This newspaper doubts whether any ultimatum would have cushioned the temperaments of SLFA? Was it not the same SLFA officials who were advocating for a foreign coach in the first place? Minister Kamaras appointment of Coach Mattsson was initially approved by SLFA. We cannot understand why SLFA became a chameleon overnight! Paul Kamaras firmness to eradicate corruption in football may be the catalyst, perhaps!

It is insignificant for whatever the reason or reasons for this imbroglio. What matters is our national team which is bigger than all of us. Everything must be done to resolve this football Tsunami.  We must not give FIFA any reason to ban our Leone Stars, especially now that our boys are still in the race to qualify for next years greatest African football competition.

Our sporting authorities must not allow the fans to begrudge them because we believe that fans will never forgive any one who forestalls their green, white and blue flag from flying in competitive football. Remember that Leone Stars is the only umbrella organisation that unites all Sierra Leoneans. Leone Stars is a mass national movement that can overcome any political party in the country! Even our populist President Koroma would not deny this fact!

That is why we are appealing to Minister Paul Kamara and SLFA officials to bury their diverse political differences and partisanships for the survival of our national football team.
