IRMT is the Light at the End of the Tunnel!

With the full support of the government and other stakeholders, there is no doubt that the operations of the International Records Management Trust IRMT will become one of the best projects the people of this country will benefit from in years to come.

The activities of the IRMT here are closely supervised by the Public Sector Reform Unit. The IRMT, which commenced its Records Management Reforms programme in Sierra Leone about six years ago, is primarily aimed at building records for all civil and public servants.

IRMT is contracted by government and their main objective is to institutionalise the systems that govern the management of human resource information and date collection through the use of new technologies in order to ensure that the gains to date can be sustained in the future.

The Awareness Times is impressed with the progress made so far because IRMT has made significant inroads by strengthening payroll departments through the reduction of ghost workers and the identification of civil and public servants who should have lawfully retired long time ago. We commend the government for working hand in glove with the IRMT technocrats. IRMT is obviously good news for genuine teachers in particular and education in general. The latest IRMT project is the Teachers Records Management Improvement Programme TRMIP and is geared towards the gathering of essential information about every teacher and every school that are funded by government.

By next month, TRMIP, headed by Mr. Muniru Kawa, who is the Programme Manager, will commence the visits of every school in the Western Area and its environs in order to gather correct data about every school and teachers. We applaud this initiative as this will definitely uncover corrupt schools and ghost teachers who continue to misuse government resources. The school visits by TRMIP officials will involve counting students of each gender for each grade present. And all non-verified teachers will be suspended from the payroll during these visits. We understand that reports will be provided on all teachers found working but are not receiving pay.

This newspaper thinks the government has taken the right initiative to curb corruption in our institutions. TRMIP is actually implementing what President Ernest Koromas Agenda for Change is yearning for. We believe genuine teachers are always on strike because ghost teachers are eating the humble pie that really belongs to genuine teachers!

In as much as we doff our humble hat to the government and IRMT, for fighting against corrupt civil and public servants, we urge all relevant stakeholders to be committed and ensure that anyone found wanting must be punished.
