The leading gold mining firm in Sierra Leone, Cluff Gold Mining Public Liability Company, has offered seven Sierra Leonean students scholarships to pursue Masters and Post Graduate Diploma courses in Mining Engineering in Ghana.

The ceremony took place at State House yesterday in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Education, Alhaji Alghassimu Jah, the Chief of Staff at State House, representatives of the Ministry of Mines, the beneficiaries and their guarantors.

In his statement, the General Manager of Cluff Gold Mr. Alusine Jalloh said providing education for Sierra Leonean students is part of their Corporate Social Responsibility.

He said in previous years, Ghanaians and other foreigners used to come to Sierra Leone in search of knowledge but ironically, we are now going to their country to seek knowledge.

Mr. Jalloh disclosed that the seven students are the pacesetters and if they utilise this opportunity very well, his company might consider other students as well.

He said the aim of the scholarship is to improve the human resource capacity especially in the areas of mineral resources.

He noted that the students are going to serve as good will ambassadors not only for themselves but the country at large.

He commended the Ministries of Education and Mines for making the selection process so easy.

In his statement, the Deputy Minister of Education Honourable Jah described the scholarships as ways of complementing government efforts.

He said it is high time for Sierra Leone to capacitate human resource based in the area of mining as the country is endowed with minerals.

Alhaji Jah said since his government came to power, many Sierra Leonean students have been sent abroad especially to Ghana to further their studies.

He expressed the hope that the gesture will serve as example for other companies to emulate.

He commended Cluff Gold for giving this golden opportunity to the students.

In his keynote address, the Chief of Staff, State House, Dr. Keifala Marah commended the company on behalf of the President and people of Sierra Leone.

He said it is very timely for Sierra Leoneans to be offered the chance to study mining as this will help citizens to manage their minerals instead of bringing foreign experts.

Dr. Marah noted that Cluff Gold is building the manpower capacity in that direction and therefore deserved commendation.

He appealed to the students to go and do their best and come back to Sierra Leone and to set the pace.

The students include Mohamed Bayoh, Micheal Teddy Timbo, and Mustapha M. Dongboi for the Masters Programme; whilst Evelyn D. Blackie, Archibald Pratt, Anthony T. Mansaray and Brima Kamara for Post Graduate Diploma.

The signing of the bond by the guarantors marked the climax of the ceremony.
