Robis to Launch Advocacy Campaign


A community organisation called Robis WASH Committee is reportedly planning to launch an advocacy campaign for the fencing of the Robis Cemetery at Calaba Town in Freetown. The cemetery is alleged to be in a deplorable state and as a result, the community stakeholders will soon hold a meeting to deliberate on the fencing, the encroachment, deposition of garbage and other activities. The Youth Development, Goal Sierra Leone, Oxfam, Action Contre La Faim have contributed to the fencing, according to local newspapers.

 

UN confirms Reduction in Child Mortality

 

United Nations report has confirmed the drop in child mortality globally in the past decades. UNICEF and WHO have indicated that the death rate of children under five has dropped drastically from 12 million in 1990 to about 7.6 million in 2010. Similarly in Sierra Leone, the figure has reportedly reduced to 61%.

 

PEN to Write New Books for Pupils


Local tabloids have it that PEN Sierra Leone is developing more than two thousand books for Sierra Leone children between the ages of 9 and 13 years. The Sierra Leonean authors are reportedly expected to write stories that will reflect contemporary societal life with interesting stories about past glory the country seems to have lost. A-five-day training for local writers and illustrators has recently ended in Freetown for the programme.

AADC Provides Safe Drinking Water

 

A non-governmental organisation, the Animated Area Development Committee (AADC) has recently commissioned six water wells in different communities in the Western Area. The areas benefiting from the project include Moyemi, Morie Oguku, Consider Lane, Sorie Lane and Kissy Looking-Town benefited. The organisation has noted that the communities are in dire need of water and AADC has come to their rescue. The project cost Le 59 million leones and the funding was provided by Action Aid International. Local newspapers say other communities will soon benefit from the same project.

 

Baby Saves Suckling Mother from Custody!

 

Rachel Marrah, a suckling mother, has reportedly got bail from Magistrate J.O Wellington of Court No 2 in Freetown last week for the sake of her baby. She appeared before the court on three counts charge of abusive language, public insult and provocative and defamatory slander. The prosecution has alleged that the accused person on September 8, 2011, rained abusive language on one Isatu Mansaray, the complainant. Reports say the suspect also maliciously used slanderous remarks against the complainant in July this year at the Wilberforce Barracks. The suspect was subpoenaed twice but failed to appear in court and a warrant of arrest was issued as a result.

 

Albinos Demand Equal Rights!

 

The Sierra Leone Albino Association (SLAA), in their inaugural meeting recently in Freetown, has asked the government to offer Albinos jobs and scholarships so as to stop the marginalisation their people are facing. They alleged that stigmatisation, marginalisation and harassment have continued to come their way. They said if they are given the status that befits them it will enhance their respect in society. Over 300 Albinos, who assembled during their meeting, have vehemently kicked the inhuman treatment often meted out against them here and in other countries.
 

SLRTA Donates to GTI

 

The Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority (SLRTA) has recently donated six new toilet seats to the Government Technical Institute at Kissy Dockyard in Freetown. The items were presented by the SLRTA Executive Director, Ahmed K. Yansaneh. The institute described the items as a kind gesture and expressed thanks to the SLRTA.

 

No Bail for Waterloo Armed Robbers

 

Presiding Magistrate of Freetown Court No2 J.O Wellington has denied the four alleged armed robbers bail. The accused persons include Mohamed Sesay, Aruna Sesay, Issa Koroma and Aruna Sesay aka Kolenten. They are alleged to have rampage the complainants house at 42 Main Motor Road Waterloo and made away with property worth millions of Leones.  Reports say the accused were armed with locally made pistols during the attack in June this year.
