Prof. Wangari Maathai, Africaís First
Female Nobel Laureate Passes On
Africa's first woman to win Nobel peace prize, Wangari Maathai, died on Sunday 25th September 2011 having lost her battle with cancer. She was 71.
Maathai was a formidable woman who inspired many women to believe in themselves; not only in her native Kenya but all around the world.
News of her death was greeted with mourning all around the world as condolences poured in from great persons like America's Barack Obama to Liberia's Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf down to so many ordinary Africans like students writing on Facebook.
Wangari Maathai attained fame for being a fearless social activist & environmental crusader. She was beaten and arrested numerous times but never relented. Her bravery and defiance made her a hero in Kenya and bagged her the 2004 Nobel peace prize.
Wangari Maathai is survived by her three children and a granddaughter. May her soul R.I.P.
