Miss Sierra Leone is Our Business!

Yesterday we ran a story about Miss Sierra Leone Swadu Natasha Beckley in which the beauty queen intensified her appeal to raise funds for her trip to the United Kingdom for the forth coming Miss World Beauty Pageant.

Natasha is apparently a worried lady at the moment including her numerous fans in Sierra Leone and in the Diaspora. They are concerned that her trip to the UK next month for the World Beauty Pageant will not materialise!

Natashas frustration is understandable considering her inability to raise the much needed finances to sponsor her and her entourage for the UK trip. There is no headway at the moment, and as the date is coming closer, my fear is that I might not make it on time for the pageant, she recently confided to the Awareness Times.

This newspaper is equally worried about Natashas plight because we simply consider her a national figure. We strongly believe that as Miss Sierra Leone, Natasha is a national treasure whatever way you look at it. This is enough reason to be proud of her and give her all the necessary support either in cash or kind to make her dream come true.

We are very disappointed that the Sierra Leone generosity that has characterised us over the years is slowly dwindling away. Despite the numerous appeals made by Natasha, all she has got is one heart break to another! Yes, things are very tough presently in the country. Yes, most people are jobless and even those in employments are finding it extremely difficult to make ends meet.

However, the Awareness Times is proud to say we have many well-to-do Sierra Leone business men and women today who are extremely rich and powerful. Many of them are capable of solving Natashas problem in no time! But why are they not interested? Do they feel the Miss World Beauty contest is insignificant? Where is the patriotism they often preach? Is the green, white and blue flag, which Natasha will surely wave no longer meaningful?

When it comes to national patriotism, only a handful of us are true believers! Natasha, who won the Miss Sierra Leone/Jubilee 2011 and was duly crowned Miss Sierra Leone 2011 revealed that she met President Ernest Koroma recently and after her plea His Excellency gave her some financial support which she highly appreciated.

We join Natasha for commending President Koroma and others who have contributed so far. But we are also worried, like Natasha, that Sierra Leone will not be represented in next months Miss World Beauty Pageant in the UK if we fail to raise sufficient finances to fund her trip.

We must not allow this to happen, because Natashas failure to appear on the Miss World stage will not only be a disappointment for her personally, it will also be a serious indictment on us all. Observers will definitely question our patriotism. We should show them that we truly love our country. Lets know that the Miss Sierra Leone Institution is the business of every Sierra Leonean!

We urge our rich brothers and sisters to rise to this occasion and contribute whatever little they have to Natashas cause. This is a national embarrassment we must not condone!

This newspaper is therefore appealing to every one in the country, local and foreign companies, NGOs, politicians, technocrats, professionals to put their hands on deck to help Natasha. Please! Please!

She started beauty pageantry in 2008 in London and has won several beauty contests organised in the UK, US and Africa. She holds an International Relations degree from the University of Virginia in US.
