Companiesí Snub of USL Job Fair is Against CSR!

Many things that happen in Sierra Leone today are virtually inconceivable in other countries. The boycott tactics exhibited by the leading companies in the country during the recent University of Sierra Leone job opportunities fair for graduates is one classic instance.

The Awareness Times finds it strange and cannot fathom why all the major companies decided to snub the 2011 Career/Job Fair for University/College Graduates held at the Atlantic Hall, National Stadium between September 27 and 28 in Freetown.

We have no doubt that the Job Fair snub by the major companies, for whatever reason or reasons, is clearly against their own Corporate Social Responsibilities CSR. Corporate Communication experts believe a companyís CSR is part and parcel of their aims and objectives which is primarily designed to creating employments in host countries.

The Job Fair is understandably geared towards creating the perfect environment for students and graduands to network with major companies to know more about their products and vision and most importantly to create career opportunities for the students and graduates.  Considering the facts surrounding unemployment in Sierra Leone today, we think the USL Job Fair organisers did an excellent work as this is one good opportunity that would have been seized by our companies to look for talents among our many unemployed graduates and youths. But the blatant absence of these companies has raised more questions than answers. We believe this is not a productive move!

No surprise that the organisers of the Job Fair have blasted the major companies like the mining companies, telecommunications companies etc. for failing to turn up at the National Stadium for the Fair.

The Public Relations Officer of the University of Sierra Leone Madam Loha Aforo has confirmed their disappointment and noted that the conspicuous absence of major company has not helped in fighting unemployment.

ďWe invited more than 450 big and small companies in the country through letters for the USL Job Fair. But, none of the big companies came to be part of the student networking.

This is very disappointing,Ē PRO Aforo stressed.

A final year Geology student at Fourah Bay College, said he came to the Job Fair with the sole aim of networking with mining companies like African Minerals, London Mining etc. He explained how frustrated he was for their absence.

We commend the companies and government institutions like the Police, Prisons etc. that graced the USL Career occasion. President Ernest Koromaís Agenda for Change is the Young Baby that must be cared for by all Sierra Leoneans and our foreigner partners alike.¬†

A Nursing graduate from the College of Medicine Allied and Health Sciences COMAHS vented her anger: ďSome of the companies who graced the occasion did not take the CVs they presented with the seriousness it deserves.Ē¬† We really appreciate the role and responsibilities of these major firms operating in Sierra Leone today, but snubbing an important programme like the USL Job Fair, can seriously worsen our unemployment problem!

It is in this vein that the Awareness Times is appealing to every one who believes in progress to contribute in order to reduce unemployment in Sierra Leone.
