In Sierra Leone, Abacha Street Traders blast 50/50 Group & CSOís

Hundreds of traders, who are operating businesses at Sani Abacha Street in Freetown, have unanimously blasted the 50/50 Group and other Civil Society Organisations CSOs for their silence on the bloody violence and intimidation that women continue to experience in Sierra Leone today.

In a peaceful demonstration along the streets of Freetown yesterday Tuesday October 4, 2011, the disgruntled and emotional women traders, dressed in black T-Shirts, denounced so called womenís organisations for failing to fight for the rights of women in the country.

Displaying placards reading Ė ĎPartial Silenceí Ď50/50 Where are Youí ĎWe Are All Zainab Mansarayí Ė the traders vented their anger and frustration on the good-for-nothing womenís groups and they cited as example the barbaric mistreatment of the All People Congress (APC) Chairlady South, Madam Zainab Mansaray last month by SLPP supporters in Bo City.

The women protesters chanted that the 50/50 group is an organisation that has been known for advocating for women in the country, but their state of silence in recent times has only proven that 50/50 now has a hidden agenda.

The Public Relations Officer of the Abacha Traders Union, Madam Fatu Conteh told the Awareness Times yesterday that 50/50 and others have become toothless cows as women are being raped, molested, assaulted and manhandled by groups of people in order to satisfy their selfish whims and caprices in Sierra Leone.

Madam Fatu Conteh used the opportunity to demand that the 50/50 Group and other Civil Society Organisations, mandated to be advocators of women activities in the country, to come to the forefront to publicly condemn all molesters and violators of womenís civil rights in Sierra Leone.

She finally cautioned the membership of the 50/50 group to rationally and swiftly join them in their strive so that the long built good perception of the 50/50 group would be restored once again in readiness to fight the stereotypic and often negative perceptions about women held by many retrogressive male chauvinists in the country.

Speaking to a mammoth crowd at Abacha Street, the President of the Abacha Street Clock Tower Fatmata Costo said they as traders are not only unhappy with the total silence shown by the 50/50 Group but they are also surprise to see that an organisation claiming to seek the equal representation of women in parliament is in such a mute state while women like the APC Southern Chairlady Zainab Mansaray is being intimidated.

Sallay Koroma, a petty trader at the Abacha Street has also expressed her dissatisfaction for the 50/50 group and added that they decided to march peacefully for the public to hear their cry.
