In Sierra Leone, MRU Crowns First Woman Secretary General

The Mano River Union (MRU) last evening Tuesday October 4, 2011 crowned the first woman Secretary General for the Union.

In the ceremony, the first woman Secretary General Ambassador Dr. Hadja Saran Daraba Kabba took over the hot seat at the Unions Secretariat on Lightfoot Boston Street in Freetown.

The out going Acting Secretary General Mrs. Linda Koroma welcomed the incoming scribe. She said since the establishment of the MRU in 1973, all the Union leaders have been controlled by men.

She cited that it was in 2008 that President Ernest Bai Koroma advised the Union to let the Union have a woman Secretary General.

Mrs. Koroma expressed the hope that with a woman Secretary General in the Union, wonderful things will happen and that the union will progress from strength to strength. The Minister of International Cooperation in the Republic of Guinea Mr. Mustapha Kutub Sannoh assured his audience that the newly crowned Secretary General is a very hard working woman. He said she was not selected by the Guinean Government by mistake but by choice.

He said Dr. Daraba Kabba has fought and contributed immensely towards the restoration of peace in the Mano River Union.

On behalf of the Sierra Leone Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Director Africa Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mr. Unisa Kamara welcomed the newly crowned Secretary General to Sierra Leone.

He said the new appointee is a woman of substance and has no doubt on her performance and capability in handling the Union.

He assured her of his ministrys support in the discharge of her new duties.

He said it is disheartening to recall that the entire membership of the Mano River Union suffered directly or indirectly from political instability which crippled the MRU for a long time, adding that it is now fortunate to have leaders who are committed to peace, security, social justice and the economic advancement of their respective countries and peoples in particular and the sub-region in general.

Mr. Kamara used the forum to call on all citizens to make good use of the numerous available opportunities in agriculture, animal husbandry and commerce and noted for the need for more assistance in areas of Human Resource Development, Finance and Technical Expertise that will enable the Secretariat to properly get back on its feet and reactivate programmes that have been lying dormant as direct consequence of the civil wars.

He said since it is difficult to transfer goods and services within the union because of bad roads, there is a need for development partners to provide more assistance by way of financing the construction of more highways connecting member states and added that on security matters there is also an absolute need for the holding of regular joint security meetings by our security officers.

This he said will no doubt discourage the trafficking of small arms and light weapons, drugs as well as smuggling. Ambassador Dr. Hadja Saran Daraba Kabba succeeded the former MRU Secretary General Ambassador Chernor Habib Diallo who passed away in July this year following a gruesome road accident from Sierra Leone while he was on his way to the Republic of Guinea to finalise arrangements for the meeting of the MRU Ministerial Council.
