SLFA Delegation is Always a Laughing Stock!

The Sierra Leone Football Association SLFA is at it again. This time, for another wrong reason! God knows when SLFA will stop taking a very long gravy-train delegation for international matches in the name of Leone Stars!

That is exactly what SLFA has resorted to do for the crucial away encounter between the Leone Stars and South Africas Bafana Bafana on Saturday October 8, 2011. Many football fans have complained again why SLFA and the Sports Ministry continue to elasticate Leone Stars delegation unnecessarily.

The Awareness Times finds it incredibly laughable when the SLFA Public Relations Officer Osman Sesay told CTN FM radio yesterday morning that the number expected to make up the SLFA delegation to South Africa today or tomorrow is around 38 to 40 people. What a ridiculous thing to do!

There is obviously one thing that comes to mind when a ridiculously high number of the SLFA delegation is selected for the South Africa match! What else would most of the delegates go to South Africa for? It is undoubtedly because of the lucrative US dollar per diem allowances that go with it. What else? To support Leone Stars? Zilch!

A cross section of Sierra Leonean fans also feels that many of those in the delegation are partially selected. This newspaper believes one does not need to be a chartered accountant to decipher how costly it would be to fly over 38 SLFA officials to South Africa. Its unthinkable for a country that is suffering economically to accrue such an astronomical sum to finance a venture that involves some officials that are going for personal gains alone.

This newspaper believes any football association, especially properly run ones should always be guided by one main principle. Such an FA must be principled enough to administer genuinely to improve football within the scope of the limited finances available.

We think running the FA within the purview of its finances, by spending it on those who are essentially important and leaving out any unwarranted expenditure that goes towards those considered insignificant, is the only way forward. Thats the way civilise people behave!

It is clear that the players and the team officials are the most important stakeholders in any FA delegation. There should at least be around 18 players, the head coach, the assistant coach, two team medics, a top FA official, a top Sports Ministry official and one or two officials from the Referee Association to make the delegation.

Any sober-minded FA will always limit their delegation to not more than 26-high-power delegation. Limiting the number of delegates to the minimum is advantageous for both the FA and Sports Ministry as the little finances at their disposal will be spent on players and other officials that matter.

Our FA must stop this habit and concentrate on how best to motivate our Leone Stars. Its no surprise that our players are always grumbling about not being paid their per diems and other allowances. Even first world countries do not take a large number of delegates unless perhaps for world cup finals which lasts for about a month. Yes, thats understandable!

Our SLFA has some competent officials who know the rules of the game. Such officials must reach out to those so-called football technocrats so as to stop our FA from being a laughing stock!
