SLPP, PMDC, NDA Partisanship over Nationalism is Unpatriotic!

In the aftermath of the sad political boycott of parliament last Friday, peace loving Sierra Leoneans and foreigners alike are beginning to question the patriotic and democratic credentials of some of the political parties that want to rule this country.

The atmosphere in the house of parliament was tense on Friday October 7, 2011 when opposition MPs boycotted President Ernest Bai Koromas State of the Opening Address. This is an annual event that normally shows what the government has done over the years and what they intend to do for the people of Sierra Leone in the future.

Some people believe it is a sign of responsibility for all political parties to be present for the State Opening of Parliament! Unsurprisingly, internal and external stakeholders who were present to listen to President Koromas speech were not impressed with the boycott as it has the hallmarks of undemocratic intentions!

The Awareness Times is equally not impressed with the negative posture of the opposition MPs because hatching any plot to boycott parliamentary procedures that cater for national development is unpatriotic. It only highlights the lack of nationalistic spirit in certain members of these political parties in Sierra Leone!

The rebellion was led by the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) and supported by Charles Margais Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) party supporting blindly. The Presidents Speech entails many good things that will even benefit the families of those who sadly boycotted parliament. What an irony as the benefits will spread everywhere irrespective of party or regional affiliations!

Putting partisan politics above national agenda is retrogressive for our fragile but hopeful democracy.

Sierra Leone will lag behind other countries in the sub-region if we believe in partyism. Is it not time to wear our thinking hats rationally in order to move away from the dictates of Partyism? What the SLPP and cohorts did, for whatever reason or reasons, is tantamount to undermining all the good things this country stood for.

The SLPP, PMDC and NDA issued a joint press statement on Thursday October 6, 2011 headlined Assault on Democracy where the trio vented their grievances. They pinpointed reasons such as political violence, police ban on political activities, and the non-implementation of reports of the Shear-Moses Commissions of Inquiry for boycotting parliament. This newspaper views the above reasons as smoke screen.

Whats the big deal in the police ban? Is it not affecting all the political parties including the ruling APC? The temporal ban is timely, correct and it is for the sustainability of national security in the country. Or do we want to encourage more bloody skirmishes like the recent violence in Bo? No! No!! No!!! A ban like this does not warrant a boycott or a Black Friday?

The Sierra Leone Constitution, which embodies the laws of the land, clearly states that no one is above the law. There is nothing wrong for the police ban because they acted within the purview of the law? It is only wrong for people who have ulterior motives. Isnt it?
