Massive Investments in 2011 yet very Few Jobs for Sierra Leone!

Joblessness is now the global virus. In Sierra Leone unemployment is one crucial challenge that President Ernest Koromas government has to contend with if he wins the 2012 presidential elections.

The Minister of Labour and Social Security Hindolo S. Trye said recently that employment is a priority in the Governments Agenda for Change but the country faces a huge problem of unemployment as a majority of youths are jobless.

Sierra Leone is unique unlike other nations because of the presence of abundant and priceless natural resources marketable every where in the world. Astonishingly, majority of our people are unemployed despite the rise of investors in the country.

The Awareness Times is putting two and two together to understand the low percentage of employment here despite the massive investments in mineral extraction in the country. We believe one of the fundamentals of any investment policy is to create employment in the host country. That is the way it should happen in Sierra Leone!

The extractive sector of the economy is the main income generating sources of our revenue. The main bulk of Sierra Leones economy is the mining of Gold, Diamond, Rutile, Bauxite, Iron Ore and other lucrative government departments like the Immigration. This newspaper is a strong believer in generating national revenue locally rather than relying on donors!

The African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa have recently released a Report about investments in many African countries, including Sierra Leone. The 2011 Report says many foreign investors have raided Africa purely for mineral extractions. Despite the increase in investments, it has created few employments, according to the Report.

That is why this newspaper commends the Labour and Social Security and the Youth Employment and Sports ministries for launching the National Employment Policy at the Miatta Conference Hall in Brookfields Freetown on Thursday September 22, 2011. Its unbelievable that Sierra Leone has been without such a policy for the past fifty years!

This policy will analyse the strategic framework to inform government, the largest employer in the country, and the private sector and other internal and external stakeholders on the potential for employment promotion in Sierra Leone. We believe this policy will tackle, with all seriousness, youth unemployment head on so as to have peace and love here.

We think Sierra Leones greatest challenge now is how to properly manage the economy especially now that petroleum exploration is round the corner. Hopefully, more jobs will be created in order to alleviate the poor state of the social ladder in Sierra Leone despite the untapped natural wealth around us.

We are however proud of President Koromas development drive as we slowly move away from the eye sores of the past.
