Itís Clever to Re-open the University Doors Now!

Itís incredibly crazy that the doors to the University of Sierra Leone Ė comprising of Fourah Bay College FBC, Institute of Public Administration and Management IPAM, and the College of Medicines and Allied Health Science COMAHS Ė are still shut to the public. Is selfish politicking between university administrators and the government responsible for this?

The delay in re-opening the constituent colleges has inflicted unnecessary suffering on everyone especially important stakeholders like students, who are visibly alarmed, concerned and dissatisfied over the lack of effective communication within the university. It is becoming an embarrassment for government the longer this imbroglio drags on!

The students have a social contract with the university administration and yet, the latter is not only quiet on when the university doors will be re-opened they are also delaying the publishing of examination results, dilly dallying on studentsí accommodation on campus as well as delaying in the admission of new students. Itís crazy that everything at USL is at a standstill!¬†¬†

One does not need to put one and one together to decipher the main reason why the university administrators have decided to take this stern action. We believe the delay in increasing lecturersí salaries is the gist of this problem. As justifiable as their strike action is, we think the lecturers would have got more sympathy from the public if university classes are in full swing while they continue the protest unabated.

The Awareness Times is taken aback why the government and the university administration are delaying to strike compromise. Itís disgraceful for both protagonists for the university students to be on artificial holiday! It has the propensity to undermine President Ernest Bai Koromaís Agenda for Change. The enemies of education will surely feel triumphant the longer this imbroglio continues. Nipping it in the bud now is the best way out for everyone!

The Public Relations Officer of the National Union of Sierra Leone Students NUSS Mr. Abdul Karim Kargbo recently cited one instance of their plight: ďLaw students who are supposed to have enrolled in Law School are unable to do so because of the delay in publishing their results on time. 60 to 70 percent of foreign students are now being admitted to the same school, leaving the Sierra Leonean students in limbo.Ē

This newspaper believes the ongoing impasse is responsible for the law studentsí inability to submit their grades to the Legal Examination Council before they could be accepted. But how could they submit their results when such results are yet to be published by university administrators?

We believe a short term solution is feasible now to kick start the full flow of the university, otherwise the anger engulfing these innocent students and their families will exacerbate to a point of no return. We do not think the progressive stakeholders want this to happen. We totally condemn this ongoing problem because the longer it goes on the more detrimental it will be as the reputation of the University of Sierra Leone will be questioned as well as the re-branding of our country. It is therefore incumbent upon all progressive Sierra Leoneans to appeal to the university administration and the education ministry to put their differences aside and re-open the colleges now.
