AML Should Spread Railway Safety Messages Wider!

The department of the Corporate, Social Safety and Community Relations of the African Minerals Sierra Leone Limited is communicating its corporate messages effectively in the northern part of Sierra Leone. No doubt about that.

Kudos to AML for engaging all the communities in the north including primary and secondary schools in promoting and spreading awareness of the hazards and safety measures often associated with rail way operations.

The Awareness Times is a keen observer and very much interested in the ongoing rail safety sensitisation community meetings in the Tonkolili, Bombali and Port Loko Districts. Since the resumption of the AML sensitisation of communities last month, clever corporate safety messages about crossing railways etc. have been communicated to many stakeholders, especially internal ones.

Messages like: At crossing points you must stop, look, listen and you will stay alive. Another incisive and striking slogan reads: LIFE IS ONE, LOOK AFTER IT. This is AMLs comprehensive corporate strategies aimed at educating the population in the north of Sierra Leone before the commencement of the real rail operations for transporting Iron Ore, Bauxite and other minerals from mining sites to the ports for overseas shipments.

Now that AML has completed the first phase of a series of planned sensitisation campaigns on October 15, 2011, this newspaper is urging the company to think nationwide in their next sensitisation campaigns.

Yes, AML only operates in the north at the moment! Yes, its sensible for rail safety awareness to start in the north! Yes, AML is not in other regions yet!

But whats wrong for easterners, southerners and westerners in these regions to be given the opportunity to get the same corporate messages for railway safety?  We vehemently believe spreading this sensitisation programme in the east, south and west of Sierra Leone would be a clever and cost effective move.

Mind you, Sierra Leone is a small country. People travel from one region to the other in a twinkle! Imagine a scenario where individuals from the eastern, southern or western regions of Sierra Leone decide to travel to Port Loko or Bombali or Tonkolili on holidays. Imagine if these visitors have never seen railways or trains live in operation!

Imagine such individuals, who have never been schooled on railway safety measures, suddenly alight at crossing points with AML loaded trains coming at full speed. Disaster will definitely occur if such individuals are not lucky.

Then what happens with AML if fatal accidents take place. AML will certainly face the weight of the law. You see the point?

In fact, the AML will also benefit some how. Such a nationwide sensitisation scheme will attract school going children from the east, south and the west to tour AML railway areas for educational purposes. You never know! Never say, never!

That is why we are calling on the AML authorities to re-strategise a policy where railway safety measures are taught in districts around the country.
