The Waste Management Strike is a Dilemma!

The strike action envisaged by angry staff members of the Freetown Waste Management Company FWMC has not gone down well with many residents in the Freetown municipality.

Such an action at a time when Freetown is heavily infested with filthy rubbish dumps in various parts of the city is untimely and it is a recipe for health hazards.

The Awareness Times believes this planned strike is inappropriate considering the increase number of uncollected waste sites in the city. We abhor this situation as it would lead to the further deterioration of our Keep the City Clean campaign.

It is clearly disturbing for any FWMC strike. Yes, the workers have a genuine demand to do so. Yes, the FWMC staff should be paid their back logs. Yes, their service benefits must improve. But striking now would only give the FWMC management excuse to further delay the implementation of the workers demands.

We cannot really understand why the Freetown City Council, under whose authority the FWMC is functioning, has dragged its feet for so long thereby putting all stakeholders in unnecessary apprehension. We believe this is against the government legislation to keep the city clean.

Why has the Freetown City Council become so dormant in making Freetown a dirt free city? This is the one-million-Leone question on the lips of many Freetonians who take great pride in living 24/7 in safe and environmentally friendly surroundings!

The Awareness Times has observed of late how our capital city is littered with rubbish in some strategic locations from the west end to the east end; piles upon piles of rubbish dumps as high as mini mountains could be seen. Its unbelievable how our beautiful Freetown has become a filth city overnight.

The FWMC was established under the government of President Ernest Bai Koroma by an Act of Parliament to serve as the authorised waste disposal unit in the municipality of Freetown. It was initially funded partly by the World Bank and partly by the Freetown City Council. And things were running smoothly when Mr. Tamba Charles, a qualified sanitation officer with a post graduate degree in waste management, was in charge.

It looks coincidental that the removal from office of the former executive Director of FWMC Mr. Tamba Charles had left some loopholes within the FWMC operations. Mayor Herbert George Williams needs to explain this coincidence. We need efficient FWMC officials to run this important institution.

That is why we welcome the promise made recently by Mr. Gibril Mohamed Kallon the Human Resources Officer of the FWMC that his company would do everything within his power to reach an agreement with the angry work force.

Where is the Task Force that used to arrest and punish individuals who throw litters in our streets in Freetown? The task force was doing marvellous job to keep the city clean by fining violators 100,000 leones. Where are they now Mr. Mayor? Please bring them back for many of us want them back.

This newspaper is appealing to the FWMC staff to exercise patience and continue their good work. We also urge the FWMC authorities to wake up and listen to their workforce. Remember health and safety is your job! We need it.
