The E4A Communication Strategy is Spot on!

The Evidence for Action (E4A), which is funded by the UK Department for International Development DFID, has a big five-year plan to help in the reduction of maternal and neo-natal mortality in Sierra Leone.

The Awareness Times believes that the health system here is making progress to save the lives of mothers and infants despite the constraints involved. And E4A has noted that maternal mortality can be reduced if the use of evidence, advocacy and accountability is taken in to consideration.

We welcome the E4A initiatives to improving health awareness in the country. And what caught the attention of this newspaper is the communication issue mentioned by E4A. E4As communication strategy is spot on as it will surely bring success in the health sector in Sierra Leone. Read what Ann Pettifor, the DFID Adviser said recently in Freetown: The government of Sierra Leone, especially President Ernest Koroma and the First Lady Sia Nyama Koroma, are committed to saving lives of mothers and children, but there is a gap in the information process as people cannot access data.

The DFID Adviser maintained that E4A is going to help out with getting the evidence, advocacy for mothers and children for them to get a better health care, so that doctors can get better resources, donors can give money towards the health care system. We believe the communication gap has been one of the problems that need to improve in the country. The E4A communication plan is a lesson for the Health and Sanitation Minister Zainab Bangura who blasted the media a couple of weeks ago that journalists must not insist on cross checking stories with her.

I have my media department, talk to them for any information you want, she said. A public outburst like this coming from an important government ministry is not good for the flow of information and communication especially for health matters that affect all Sierra Leoneans. We therefore commend E4A for reminding us all about the communication loophole here.  This newspaper believes in effective communication as it is the sure way to properly inform and give our people the knowledge they need to get better maternal and neo-natal health services.

It will also generate political commitment, strengthen accountability and improve planning and decision making at all levels. As the E4A operatives envisage commencing their work in Sierra Leone within the next six to eight months, our advice is for them to continue to collaborate with the government and donors and most importantly the media, whose news dissemination is vital for public consumption.
