The Seaweeds Report is Heart Breaking!

The long awaited report on the sudden appearance and re-appearance of seaweeds along our natural beaches in Freetown has been made public and we are afraid, it makes grim reading!

A summary report on the seaweeds states that the major causes of the seaweeds are the uncontrolled use of race metals, oil, hydrocarbon chemicals, synthetic organic chemicals, micro pollutants from industries, ports, heavy deposits of copper, zinc and iron, fertilizers, pesticides, nutrients in our territorial waters.

The Awareness Times commends the Senegalese Oceanographic Research Center and the Wetlands International Africa and others for the research carried out to uncover the actual causes of the massive outbreak of seaweeds at Lumley and Aberdeen beaches.

It is frightening for all Sierra Leoneans who truly want to live in clean and unpolluted environments. We think it is even more worrisome that we do not know as yet who is or are responsible for this environmental disaster.

Our health and safety is at risk as a result of this latest development. For the report to confirm that the atmospheric pollution is responsible for the seaweeds on our beaches is alarming! It is even more alarming because the gaseous substances were emissions from industries!

Whether these industries are operating here or not is another question!

The fearful thing about this phenomenon is the uncontrolled nature of the emissions. How could these industries be so careless as to allow the emission of dangerous chemicals without taking the precautionary measures to protect our environment?

Besides the socio-economic effect the seaweeds have had on the livelihood of every stakeholder along the Lumley, Aberdeen and other beaches in the country, we still believe that the health and safety of every one in the country should be paramount.

We advise the industries responsible for depositing the massive marine algae on our natural waters to re-strategise their operational tactics to make sure that they desist from dumping any poisonous wastes in Sierra Leones territorial waters.

The seaweed report has come out at a time when the Lumley and Aberdeen beaches are slowly returning to normal but from close examination, one can still see and smell something oily on the beaches. Any company, whether in the mining sector, agricultural sector or building industry etc. that did this horrible thing, has done a disservice to Sierra Leone.

As we welcome the summary report, we still believe the seaweeds problem has not been resolved yet.

We urge the government to study the findings and recommendations of the report and then put strategies in place to control the reappearance of the seaweeds in the future.

We believe that monitoring the companies here and cleaning the beaches 24/7, rehabilitating the waste purification plants would go a long way to get rid of dangerous chemicals from our territorial waters. This is a heart breaker for many people indeed!
