One of the leading mobile telecommunication companies in Sierra Leone, Africell, on Friday 25th May 2012, donated over forty million Leones to members of the Single Leg Amputee Sport Club (SLASC) in Freetown.

The donation, which was done at the companys Headquarters at Wilberforce in Freetown, was meant to support the club in their 2nd National Football Gala for Amputees, soon to be held in Makeni Town.

Handing over the donation, Africells Corporate Affairs Officer, Mr. Joe Abass Bangura, said the ceremony marks another milestone in the relationship between SLASC and Africell. He cited that the bond between them goes as far back as in 2008, when the company sponsored the club to participate in the 2008 All African Nations Cup for Amputees in Liberia, where he said the club emerged 2nd position.

In 2010, he further cited, the company again supported the club on a tour to educate schools and colleges in Spain about amputee football. According to Mr. Bangura, whilst in Spain, a friendly football match was played between the Barcelona FC Under-17 team, with feet tied and using crutches and SLASC, adding that SLASC won the match two goals to one. Mr. Joe Abass Bangura revealed that in 2011, Africell also supported SLASC to participate in the 3rd All African Nations Cup for Amputees in Ghana, where he said, the team took 4th place. He used the forum to reassure the amputees of his companys continued support.

The Sponsorship package will include a cheque of Thirty-Six Million Seven Hundred and Seventy Thousand Leone plus two trophies for the winner and runners up, two hundred branded T-shirts for the teams and supporters, media coverage and branded venue for the tournament.

Receiving the donation, the President of SLASC, Mr. Jabaty Mambo, thanked Africells management and staff for transforming and also giving hope to the lives of amputees in this country. He said some of the aims of the tournament are to build better relationship among single leg amputees in Sierra Leone and spot new talents. According to Mr. Mambo, the tournament would also be used to provide a platform for amputee youths who are skilled in football, to showcase their talents and build their foundations for the countrys national single leg team.

Speaking on the companys corporate social responsibilities, Africells Head of Section, Media, Madam Nancy L. Joseph, revealed that the company prides itself in being the predominant supporter of sports in Sierra Leone. She said the companys support spans in various sporting disciplines including, football, volleyball, lawn and table tennis and basket ball, among other sports.
