In further demonstration of his commitment to transform the security sector in Sierra Leone & in fulfillment of his Agenda for Change, His Excellency President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma on Friday 25th May 2012 has announced that every police officer will henceforth get a bag of rice to take home at the end of the month. This was after numerous such appeals from police officer to the Father of the Nation for them to also enjoy the same one bag of rice monthly privileges which was instituted for military officers. The President was speaking as he also officially handed over keys and documents for  fifty-two brand new police vehicles to the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).

The handing over ceremony which was done at Kingtom Police Field, saw thirty (30) high Veco Trucks, seven(7) mini Mercedes Benz Trucks, fifteen (15) Ambulances and one (1) Anti-Riot Hot-Water Cannons respectively.

Handing them over, the President said the purchase are in fulfillment of his commitment towards transforming Sierra Leone from a donor driven state to a donor and self-reliance state, as capacitating the SLP will above all boost state security.

Father of the Nation, His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma

He said such equipments are meant to complement police effort in providing security and safety to all residing in Sierra Leone. He said SLP is indeed a true force for good, whilst commending them for great stands in fighting crimes in the country.

He said through the effort of the SLP, Sierra Leone is among few countries recently awarded internationally, as the worlds most peaceful nations.

However, President Koroma acknowledged that despite these efforts, there are still numerous challenges, including reckless driving and violence amongst youths which all need more police attention. He called on the police to be very proactive and active in fighting these challenges.

President further called on them to map out strategies in order to address the issue of increasing road accidents in the country. He expressed dismay over the hiking figure of reported road accidents across the country in recent times and further used the forum to extend his heartfelt condolence to the families of those who have lost their loved ones to road accidents.

His Excellency reassured his governments commitment to transform the SLP, whilst noting that, his government has constructed two ultramodern hospitals in Freetown and in Kenema for personnel of the SLP.

He announced that with immediate effect, each and every personnel of the SLP will start taking home a bag of rich at the end of every month, adding that his government has also ensured that come June this year, another set of two riot vehicles are expected to arrive in the country for the police.

Receiving the donation and good news from the president, the Inspector General (IG) of the Sierra Leone Police, Mr. Francis Alieu Munu expressed thanks and appreciation to President Koroma and his government, for making the police a proud and good force to recon with.

IG Munu said President Koroma and his government have reinstalled lost glory to the men and women of the Sierra Leone Police. He assured President Koroma and the people of Sierra Leone that the police will ensure that these vehicles are well monitored and serve their intended purposes. According to IG Munu, the Koroma government has capacitated them to actively and perfectively police the November 17 polls.

He used the forum to encourage all those who were intending to flee the country for fear of riotous elections, to stay as the police are now more than capable to handle the elections in the most peaceful manner.

Speaking earlier, Woman Police AIG Elizabeth Turay, endorsed that, the government under the leadership of President Koroma, has made the Sierra Leone Police a true force to recon with. According to her, all the men and women of the force can now be very proud to be associated and identified with the force, adding that they can now be proud of timely salary payment, adequate supply of uniform and boots, amongst other essentials. Above all, she went on, the SLP can now be proudly compared to police forces in the international world. She thanked President Koroma, his government and the people of Sierra Leone for the gesture.
