Tayyib Bah Responds to Lans Gberie & States 'source of funding' for Gberie's Trip to Yamoussoukro in 1996

Former Police Superintendent Mohamed El-Tayyib Bah has, in a short note, debunked allegations published about him by Lans Gberie. The short note itself was distributed on the Internet within hours of Lansana Gberie making his now discredited attempt to revise History about the causes of the RUF War. Gberie has pushed a theory of origins of the war being as a result of lust for blood diamonds whilst others, including the countrys TRC Report have debunked his theory.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tayyib Bah who is now in Freetown on a visit from his normal residence in London, has insisted that he witnessed financial transactions between Lans Gberie and Omrie Michael Golley during the RUF Peace Talks. It has always remained a mystery as to how Lans Gberie was the only local journalist chosen to witness the Peace Talks. Rumours had abounded about just who had sponsored his presence in Yamoussoukro.

As far as my memory recalls, it was Lans Gberie himself who told me that his trip to Yamoussoukro was fully sponsored by Omrie Golley, Mr. Tayyib Bah insists.

Gberie, in an attempt to respond to Bah on a Sierra Leone online discussion group, however stopped short of saying whether he did receive cash from Golley instead defending that at the time, Omrie Golley was not yet the official RUF Spokesman. Gberie was also reticent on whether it was his IPS principals who funded his air fares, hotel rooms and daily subsistence in Ivory Coast or whether it was RUF principals. Gberies denial was however not seen as convincing by many who proceeded to blast him over the Internet yesterday.

TAYYIB BAHS PUBLISHED NOTE TO LANS GBERIE

Lans, 1996 is a long time and it is clear your memory has somehow corroded. So let me recap for you what happened that morning you are referring to. There were 4 of us Sierra Leoneans who weren't part of the 2 official delegations, namely the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) led by Foday Sankoh and the Sierra Leone Government (SLG) led by Maada Bio. We were you, the late Ambrose Ganda, Omrie Golley and my humble self.

I had just met Sankoh that morning when he was addressing his men. After exchanging felicitations, he asked what I had gone to Yamoussoukro for and I told him my mission was to appeal to him and his group to cease the fighting and endorse peace. He said that before that he would need to open an office in Freetown and asked if I would head the office. Under the circumstances, I said yes, if that would help in bringing peace to Sierra Leone.

It was immediately after that meeting that I met with you 3 guys. Remember? I met you 3 guys and told you what transpired between me and Sankoh. A few days later, an article in the Concord Times, apparently transmitted by you, was published saying that I was going to open an RUF office in Freetown.

Also, I could not have told you that I was heading an RUF office in Liberia, because I was all the time in Sierra Leone in the Police. How could I have been in two places at the same time?

Lans, I will never again try argue or prove to the world that I wasn't an RUF member. Nemesis would eventually catch up with every mortal. And one thing I would let people know: that throughout the war and even though I was in the war zones, I never heard a rebel gunshot! And throughout all those years, I never even heard more than a dozen gun shots in all those times.

God will pay everybody for their role. I, Mohamed El Tayyib-Bah, have no blood-stained hands, whether individually or jointly as a member of a bloody or murderous group.
