Several youths from Wellington yesterday June 11th 2012, visited the Awareness Times offices. They came over to ask us to formally express their gratitude to President Koroma for gracing the funeral of the two youths killed and for acceding to the request of the people of Wellington for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killings. The funerals were on Sunday June 10th 2012.

According to the youths, the President spent several hours with the Wellington community. They recounted of how he went to the home of one of the bereaved families all on his own with no armed bodyguard. President Koroma, who was accompanied by Hon. Alpha Kanu, Alhaji Usman Boie-Kamara, Hon. Musa Tarawally and Hon. Paul Kamara to name a few then physically walked with the corpses to the mosque from the Wellington Muslim Community Hall where he had listened patiently as tributes were paid.

President Koroma & his Youths Minister Paul Kamara console bereaved Wellington families on Sunday as Mohamed Bangura of UDM and Alhaji Usman Boie-Kamara look on the scene of wailing grief & pains.

A very sombre President Koroma holds hand of a weeping male relative of a deceased youth whilst Alhaji Usman Boie-Kamara is given a memorial pin-up by another family member and Mohamed Bangura of the UDM looks on

President Koroma also addressed the gathering and assured them that given the conflicting reports coming about in the wake of the shootings and killings, he planned to institute an independent investigation, free from police influence, into the killings. This, means the President might be exercising his privilege under the Law to set up a Judicial Inquest into the deaths.

According to the youths, who were effusive in their praises of President Koromas leadership style, at the mosque, the President kneeled down with mourners during the prayers for the two souls and then to the amazement of the people in the area, after the prayers with the Jamaat, President Koroma and his entourage led the procession to walk up a long hill to the cemetery with the family to bury the corpses.

The President is reported to have stayed until the graves were closed before he left Wellington and headed back to his house. According to Wellington Youths, some of the people, especially the marketwomen were so moved by the sight of His Excellency leaving everything to be with them, that they started to say, This man is like Jesus Christ.

The youths told Awareness Times that they are proud and very grateful for the fatherly care which was showed to them especially the promise that the matter would be investigated.

Meanwhile, the Government has issued a press release expressing grave concern over the spate of armed robbery in Freetown.

In the release, government showed its concern over the incident which claimed the lives of two youths.

Government extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families for those losses whilst at the same time renewing it constitutional commitment to continue to protect lives and properties of its citizens.

Government further reminded the public that the formation of community vigilante groups should only be done in due consultations with the Sierra Leone Police that has the constitutional responsibility to project lives and properties.

Government also assured the public that it will continue to provide the necessary logistical support to the police for the maintenance of Law and Order throughout the country.
