Charles Sylvanus Browne

March 27, 1923 - July 27, 2012

Pa Browne: as a young man, just after middle-age & in ripe old age

Charles Sylvanus Omopeh Browne was born in the family house on Rightpath Lane, Freetown, Sierra Leone to the union of Uriah Dandeson Browne and Mary Petan Browne (nee Taylor).  Uriah Dandeson Brown was a blacksmith and tanner who also worked as a clerk for the Railway Line, and Mary Taylor was a popular and gifted seamstress.

C.S.O. Browne attended Ebenezer Wesleyan Primary School before completing his education at Albert Academy. It was at Albert Academy that Charles developed the talent he had in sewing and fixing numerous items that he would utilize all his life.

Charles worked as a clerk for Paterson Zochonis & Co. in Conakry, Guinea and in Freetown from 1951 to 1964.  It was in Conakry that Charles first met Regina Elizabeth Tucker and the two were married in 1957 in Guinea, and in Freetown, at the Holy Trinity Church, Kissy Road. The union was blessed with six children, 15 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren who all enjoyed the company of their grandfather, with his humour lightening up the day.

After leaving PZ in 1964, Charles worked for Sierra Leone Electricity Corporation from 1965 to 1983, and was the Chief Storekeeper before retiring in 1984.  In 1985, he had an appointment with James International Enterprises Ltd for five years.

Charles was a God-fearing man and a stalwart of All Saints Church, Kissy Road, Freetown where he served as Treasurer, Committee Member for many years. Charles great grandfather and namesake had been a catechist under the Church Missionary Society and Charles used to fondly recall the stories he had been told of his great grandfathers missionary work in Bonthe.

Pa Browne will be remembered fondly by his close family members, relatives and friends. Charles or Uncle Morpeh as he was known is survived by his wife, Regina, Elizabeth Browne and children: June Sylvia Mammah, Yvette Rosemond Wilson, Princess Patricia Goodman, Charles Dennis Browne, Janette Sylreg Davies, and Leslie Sylvanus Browne, and by his grandchildren: Clifford, Ransford, Charles, Donald, Noella, Nigel, Patnacia, Dennisia, Sylvia, Sean, Sarah, Danielle, Caleb, Joshua, and Leo and by his great grandchildren: Celeste, Caleb and Mariah. Charles Sylvanus Omopeh Browne is also survived by his relatives the Browne, Brown, John, Hamelberg, Marlin and Taylor families.

He has been buried in Minnesota on Friday 17th August 2012 with a Memorial service held on the same date here in Freetown at the All Saints Church. You can visit his memorial website at:
