Sierra Leones High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Edward M. Turay and the President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association, J.B. Jenkins Johnston ESQ., have held a very successful meeting with the Chairman of the General Council of the Bar of England and Wales, Michael Todd Q.C., the Vice-Chairman Maura McGowan Q.C., and Toby Craig ESQ., Head of Communications of the Bar Council, at the Head Office of the Bar Council in London, yesterday 23rd August 2012.

Also present at the meeting was Mrs Justice Linda Dobbs, a member of the English Judiciary, who was born in Sierra Leone, and is the daughter of the late Justice A.E. Dobbs, formerly of the Sierra Leone Judiciary.

Several pertinent issues were discussed at the said meeting, including the non-reporting of decided cases of the Sierra Leone Judiciary; the composition and functioning of the Sierra Leone Council of Legal Education; the composition and functioning of the Disciplinary Committee; and the training of prosecutors both in the D.P.P.s office and the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).

It was agreed that the Bar Council of England and Wales would use its best endeavours to assist the Sierra Leone Bar Association and the Sierra Leone legal profession in general, in order to upgrade the quality of legal services offered to the public at large, as well as the quality of lawyers produced by the Sierra Leone Law School, and to protect the interest of the public at large in the dispensation of justice as guaranteed by the Sierra Leone Constitution.

It was further agreed that contacts would be maintained at all levels to ensure the fruitful outcome of the visit.  The High Commissioner thanked the Chairman of the Bar Council and his team, for receiving himself and President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association, and hoped that the contacts now established would be maintained.
