The number of cholera cases in Sierra Leone has increased to 12,456 with 224 deaths as of August 22. The case fatality rate remains at 1.8%. Western Area reported the highest number of cases 198 and 2 deaths.

The Ministry of Health and Sanitations Director of Disease Prevention and Control, Dr Amara Jambai addressed the media on the cholera situation, at a live weekly press briefing hosted by the Ministry of Information and Communications. He gave an update of the cholera epidemic, and encouraged journalists as partners to play their part in informing the public on cholera prevention and care.

Dr Jambai informed the media that the epidemic was expected to peak as the country was in the middle of the rainy season.

An increase in cholera has been reported in neighboring countries calling for strengthening of cross border cholera surveillance activities.

Ministry of Health and Sanitation, WHO, UNICEF and partners, have conducted a mapping exercise to find out areas of need in response to the outbreak. Plans are under way to strengthen Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and social mobilization activities in the underserved areas to prevent the further spread of cholera.

Mobile phone companies have started sending cholera prevention messages to mobile subscribers throughout the country in response to the call for private company involvement in the fight against the disease.

Speaking at the same occasion the Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Mr Sheka Tarawale called on the private business sector to assume their social responsibility in responding to the cholera outbreak. He said his ministry had waged war against cholera and was using all channels to reach the public with information.

WHO surveillance officers have been deployed in the districts to support the MOHS in case management training.

HEALTH MESSAGE: Always drink safe water (boiled or treated with chlorine). Drinking water must be stored in a clean covered container.
