Burnishing Sierra Leone Ruling Party's Human Rights Credentials

APC Yesterday no to APC Tiday

It is an indisputable fact the old APC party regime (1968 - 1992) was notorious for human rights abuses. This had caused some citizens to be fearful of a return of APC in 2007. However, after 5 years of APC under President Ernest Koroma, it is clear APC of yesteryears is different from this current APC regime; insofar as human rights is concerned. In the local parlance, we can say, APC tiday no to APC traday or APC yesterday no to APC tiday.

Since Koroma came to power in 2007, one of his achievements has been respect for  fundamental human rights.

As Sierra Leone goes into crucial elections this week, President Koroma, who is seeking re-election for a second term, has  impressive distinction as only Head of State in post-Independence history of the nation who has never carried out political witch hunts, stage-managed treason trials and attendant execution or imprisonment of citizens; he has never personally ordered for any journalist to be arrested for expressing his or her views; Sierra Leone has no political prisoner. Religious tolerance reigns. Sierra Leone now has an unfettered civil society.

Koroma Leadership style has seen African Statesmen like Obasanjo fly over to publicly associate with his APC campaigns

Therefore when Sierra Leone vied for a seat in the  respected UN Human Rights Council One of the most important arms of the UN our candidacy received the utmost acclaim.

During important elections at U.N. General Assembly, Sierra Leone won, scoring one of the highest votes. The importance of our nation serving in the UN Human Rights Council cannot be over-emphasized.

It is a major diplomatic VICTORY for a country that went through the most bloody civil war in Africa in which rebels cut off limbs of innocent kids & adults killing 50,000 people.

Within a short space of time after the war ended, especially during this reign of President Koroma, Sierra Leone has transformed into one of the worlds bastions for respect for human rights. This is why our candidature was not only taken seriously but we quickly got duly elected into the hallowed U.N. Council.

UN  diplomats have stated the country deserves it. This alone is enough to give the APC leader, a total victory at Saturdays polls; for had it not been for his APCs respect for human rights, our candidacy would not have been taken seriously.  We now have a big voice in promotion of respect for fundamental human rights in the world.

All Sierra Leoneans should applaud, irrespective of political affiliations  because it has enhanced and dignified our international stature.

Indeed!
