A Note to EU Elections Mission to Sierra Leone: Incumbency can be Positive and Negative

The global economic crisis has seen incumbent governments lose elections because their people could not understand the sudden triple increase in both petrol and basic commodities like bags of rice. The economy is the main reason why the former President of Zambia, H.E. Rupiah Banda lost elections. He gracefully acceded because he realised that the opposition had made much use of propaganda about the economy and high prices of food and fuel.

The same has happened all over the European Union where incumbent Presidents & Prime Ministers have lost their seats. France, Greece, Italy, Spain, etc. etc., economic crisis have swept incumbents out of office all over Europe.

Here in Sierra Leone, had it not been for the Presidents personal attention to explaining to his people at any point on the campaign trail, that the rice and fuel hikes were a global problem, he might also have lost out. This is because incumbent Governments always suffer and pay the price at elections during economic crisis.

This is why for anyone to come from the European Union and attribute misuse of incumbency as a reason for the Presidents impending landslide victory, is just too sad and shortsighted. If there was any role incumbency played, it was in heaping the woes of the economy on the head of the President as being responsible for price hikes.

Now, I watched the video when Maada Bio went to vote. Chief Observer of the EU mission, Richard Howitt was practically falling over himself to ensure Bio acknowledged his presence. Such brown-nosing was embarrassing for an independent observer! It was a very pathetic sight! I urge all to get a copy of that video and watch it. Nauseous! What a shame Mr. Richard Howitt! Shameful!

Let me now thank the EU Elections Observer Mission for mentioning my newspaper by name in their report, as being one of those newspapers which were biased against the main opposition SLPP of Mr. Maada Bio. I am very grateful that the EU-EOM has immortalised the role Awareness Times played in ensuring a collective responsibility murderer, a corrupt thief, a criminal passport sleaze, a reprehensible liar, a dangerous tribalist, a purveyor of hate speech, a child soldier recruiter and a rebellious warlord like Julius Maada Bio did not make it to State House.

Anyway, if Richard Howitt wishes to take Mr. Maada Bio along with him to become a Head of State in one of the European Union countries, that is fine. Here in Sierra Leone, the majority of us do not want Maada Bio as our President and no-one can force us to use our newspapers to promote such a man as fit to be President.  We will reconcile with Bio as our Sierra Leone brother but we will never make him to be our Fountain of Honour! Let the outsiders take note.

Q.E.D.!
