NASSIT & University Student Loans

An overwhelming nationwide cry is on; over a massive rise in University Fees this year.

Section 9 of our National Constitution states it is obligatory on the State to ensure every citizen is given the opportunity to be educated to best of his ability, aptitude and inclination by providing educational facilities at all levels, providing finance and providing supportive facilities for his/her education.

So what can we do to ensure poor students are equipped with best possible education in face of astronomically high University fees?

The answer could lie in a long-term Student Loan Scheme as happens in UK & USA. With Government being cash-strapped, who will provide such student loans?

I propose for National Social Security & Insurance Trust (NASSIT) to step in and offer such services. The loans will be repaid over long term but still with profit to NASSIT.

I believe if NASSIT can invest into those cement structures along the peninsula, they can invest in the education of the countrys human resource.

Some might say students will evade repayment after gaining education. First of all, the students should be bonded and made to sign water-tight legal agreements assenting to garnishing of future salaries and incomes; with possible criminal penalties for evasion of repayments. The student beneficiaries could also be biometrically entered into a nationwide database that will make it impossible for them to hide under the national radar as their biometric data would be firmly stored.

Eventually, with the proposed synchronization of NASSIT employment data, Passport application information, National registration cards and Voter ID cards, the NASSIT students biometric data will ensure no beneficiary can easily evade repayment of such loans as all their biometric footprints will follow them for the rest of their lives.

Bottomline, NASSIT might have answers to University woes; NASSIT Management should team with University authorities to explore how such a proposal can bear fruit.
