The people of Koinadugu, a swing district and national political indicator, who voted almost 90% for the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) are today walking proudly as their formidable son, Dr. Kaifala Marah, has been sworn in as the most powerful current minister in the Republic of Sierra Leone, second only to the President and Vice-President. Similarly, Moyamba indigenes have expressed pride in the appointment as Marah is their son-in-law who has shown a lot of personal interest in their welfare over the years. Dr. Kaifala Marah and Dr. Samura Kamara were Thursday 20th December 2012, approved unanimously by the Fourth Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone to be the Presidentís Cabinet Ministers of Finance & Economic Development and Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation respectively.
It could be recalled that Dr. Marah had been certified past Wednesday by the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments after presenting his Curriculum Vitae (CV) and credentials to the Committee while Dr. Samura Kamara on Thursday morning freshly submitted required data and documents following which they had him also certified for presentation to the entire House.
Presenting the government motion, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Sheku B.B. Dumbuya said the nominees had gone through interviews by the Parliamentary Committee on Appointment and Public Service. He disclosed that the two nominees were interviewed on track records, working experience, educational background and their national services. Hon. Dr. Teambo, the Chief Whip in Parliament seconded the motion and buttressed that the nominees had been well scrutinized by the Committee.
Contributing to the debate, Hon. Eric Komba Koedoyoma of the SLPP representing Kono District said, the nominees were among prominent Sierra Leoneans that have served the country in diverse ways. He disclosed that Dr. Marah was his student and had been very obedient and progressive in his endeavours. Hon. Hassan B. Sheriff of the APC expressed hope that the two approved Ministers will work with the honorable House as they have promised.
Hon. Frank Kposowa of SLPP representing Bo District said the two ministers have proved to be distinguished gentlemen in the country and therefore appealed to his colleagues to endorse their appointment. Hon. Dr Bernadette Lahai, Minority Leader in Parliament representing the SLPP, appealed to the approved Ministers to respect MPs. Earlier, the outspoken MP had stated that going by his rich C.V., the appointment of Marah as Finance Minister was long overdue as he would have worked better over the past few years as Minister of Finance than at the Office of the President. Lamin Turay & Desmond Crowther in Kabala also contributed to this report.
