Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute (SLARI) has held a one day seminar for farmers as well as staff of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security. The seminar which focused on Climate Change and its effects was at the Ministrys Conference Hall, Youyi Building, Brookfields, Freetown on Thursday 10th January 2013.

In his statement, Dr. Abdulai Jalloh, Manager of the Natural Resources Management programme of the Western Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development based in Dakar Senegal, said that Climate Change generally is as a result of global warming and it is evident in changes in the pattern of the element of weather, rainfall and temperature.

The effect of climate change, he went on to explain, is that, when there are early or late rains one has to be prepared for that. When there is increase in temperature, he said, the farmer should make sure that he/she has crop varieties and animal breed that are adaptable to those changing conditions.

In Sierra Leone, it was revealed of a programme known as NAPA which is an adaptation programme of action that was not only done for Sierra Leone but for many under-developed countries.

NAPA is an initiative funded by the United Nations Fremont Convention for Climate Change which assists developing countries to look at their general condition vis--vis climate change and the actions they can take to make sure that they adapt to such changes or are able to mitigate the adverse effect.

Sierra Leone, like other countries has identified certain areas of concern and it is expected that if appropriate actions are taken, Sierra Leone should be able to take appropriate action for climate change adaptation.

Highlighting the challenges for farmers in Sierra Leone to adapt to change, Dr. Jalloh said Sierra Leone has several including low hills and low soil facilities as well as pests and diseases affecting crops. Climate change effects are an additional burden dictating the pace and timing of plantations and preparations of farms. Farmers also have to adjust to grow crops suitable for changes emerging in climate conditions.

In his brief remarks on behalf of his Ministry, the Minister of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security, Dr. Sam Sesay commended Dr. Jalloh for his contribution on climate change and its effect on farmers in Sierra Leone. The problems affecting farmers on climate change, he said, would be solved as promised.
