Who is Ignorant in Sierra Leone? IMC or AWOL?

Sierra Leone Independent Media Commission (IMC) recently issued a kindergarten-styled press statement accusing members of the countrys popular social club, AWOL, as being full of ignorance. Well, based on the allegations of ignorance, we are publishing a Court-Ordered STAY OF EXECUTION in order to determine between AWOL and the IMC just who is really ignorant on this matter. Dear readers, be the judge. Between AWOL and IMC, who is ignorant?

THIS ARTICLE down below  and the Court Order published on this page, were FIRST PUBLISHED ON OCTOBER 1ST 2012. They concern the bonafide STAY OF EXECUTION of the decision of the IMC to ban the Awareness Times Newspaper for a period of one month. Please compare the Court Order on this page with the Press Release from the IMC issued last Friday. So AWOL or IMC, who is ignorant now?

By Mohamed Kamara (1ST OCTOBER 2012)

On this page is published a COURT ORDER issued to the Independent Media Commission (IMC) ordering a stay of their suspension of Awareness Times paper.

The impugned decision to suspend this newspaper has exposed both leadership and lack thereof in various sectors of the countrys journalism landscape.

Whilst Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) President Umaru Fofana and Vice-President Sheikh Bawoh were exposing their leadership lapses following decision of the IMC to suspend Awareness Times, the leadership of JABC (Journalists for Attitudinal & Behavioural Change) were rising to the challenge of true journalism leadership with a call for the immediate resignation of all IMC Commissioners.

Mr. Mohamed Lamin Wurie, National President of JABC spoke over the MONOLOGUE radio programme on Saturday 29th September 2012 during which he revealed to the shocked Nation that the IMC has been very partisan in favour of opposition SLPP mouthpiece.

The eloquent and gentle Mohamed Lamin Wurie told of how the IMC mis-handled his urgent complaint against SLPP, dated May 22nd 2012, in which he had called for IMC to investigate loads of abusive language against JABC as published by the SLPP mouthpiece.

I went to IMC for Complaints Hearing on 19th June, 26th June and 3rd July but SLPP Unity refused to show up and gave no excuse for their absence. They refused to show up to explain why they used such abusive language against me and other journalists and yet they have not been sanctioned nor fined, Mr. Wurie said, adding, There are so many complaints against SLPP journalists which are ignored at the IMC.

However, the Awareness Times which is very independent, so widely respected and is a newspaper which citizens rush for in the mornings, supposedly did not appear just one time, sent an excuse for this but they get suspended!.

It is illogical. It makes no sense. IMC should all just resign. They have failed because of politics, he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sylvia Blyden has called on the people of Sierra Leone to wake up and monitor what is going on at the IMC and SLAJ; which two institutions she insisted, have been hijacked by the opposition SLPP.
