My thoughts on Sylvia Blydenís appointment Ė A more enhanced media output now at the seat of power

When you look at the rapidly influential role being played in governance by the media during the reign of President Ernest Koroma, ¬†you are bound to appreciate the appointment of Madam Sylvia Blyden as Special Executive ¬†Assistant to the President. The appointment of Sierra Leoneís only female publisher will FURTHER ENHANCE THE WORK of the media ¬†as newsmen and women ¬†strive to do A MORE excellent job of ¬†providing ¬†understanding of events around the presidency.

While ¬†straightforward ¬†news reporting is fundamental in media work , there is also ¬†always that indispensable need for INTERPRETATIVE ¬†JOURNALISM , which is an area that Sylvia excels. I am quite confident that if given the opportunity ¬†she will create a personal touch and excellent working relations between ¬†the ¬†State House media ¬†and the society at large . ¬†Media work ¬†may or may not not be part of her job functions , especially as ¬†we have a competent press corps in place óDirector of Communications ¬†Unisa Sesay ; ¬†Jarrah Kawusu-Konte , Joseph Kamanda , Razia Kamara and one man whose name hardly pops up but is doing a great job and is an essential member of the State House Press Corps, Camera man ¬†Claudius Beckley . Sylvia is going to meet a team in place but ¬†I can tell you this for a fact that ONCE A JOURNALIST, ALWAYS A JOURNALIST. Just like the monkey does not leave its tail behind, the true journalist ¬†takes his/ her journalistic niche everywhere he/she goes.

Dr. Sylvia Blyden (Iron Lady)

GOOD JOURNALISTS will always use not only their proverbial journalistic nose for ¬†news ¬†but ¬†that journalistic panache for INTERPRETATION OF THE NEWS ¬†that makes all the difference when there is a major news break or during circumstances that we journalists refer to as a CONFLUENCE OF EVENTSói.e when two or more very important events happen at the same time and readers are out there hungry not only for information ¬†but that expert analyses of the meanings of the events, which is Sylviaís forte. Sylvia gives relevant ¬†MEANINGS to her ¬†reporting ¬†and I hope as SPECIAL Executive Assistant to the President she will have the opportunity to also talk to the media often about the meanings of events ¬†around the presidency . I am sure that, ¬†in so doing, ¬†she will not be encroaching on the work of the press corps but rather working hand-in-hand with them and helping to give more meaningful and accurate interpretation ¬†of ¬†the ¬†events at the seat of power , which, in a sense, will be ¬†an advancement of ¬†one of the flagship EBKisms ó OPEN AND TRANSPARENT GOVERNMENT. Whether purposefully or inadvertently, Sylvia Blyden is going to be a blessing to the media at large at State House.

In this new information age when there is a glut of information from all the new media in operation , like the internet for instance , the world out there is no longer content with mere straight news . The world wants interpretation of the meanings and the relevance of events  to their lives.

Another ¬†thing that should please members of the inky trade is that PRESIDENT ERNEST BAI KOROMA has proved once again that he is determined to bridge the yawning ¬†gender gap in Sierra Leone . The media should rejoice that a female member of one of their own has been appointed close to the Presidency.Women in Sierra Leone are now being called upon to perform very important functions for the nation and this bodes well for the upliftment of women in our beloved country. ¬†In Sierra Leone , just as certain trIbes are no longer hewers of wood and breakers of stone, but an essential component of governance, women are no longer mere housewives and some peopleís darlings but a necessary part of a smooth-functioning bureaucracy and governance. While the handicapped will be rejoicing for having M.B.Atilla now in governance, women too should rejoice for having the likes of Sylvia Blyden up there.

When you look at  the roles being played by women like Madams Christiana Thorpe at NEC,  Ebun Jusu and Rasie Kargbo at Foreign Affairs, Umu Tejan-Jalloh at the Supreme Court, Bernadette Lahai in Parliament,  Sunkarie Kamara as the first female Mayor ever in the North, Khadija Sesay at OGI,  Nannette Thomas at the Attitudinal Change Secretariat, Haja Kalla Kamara at NRA , Ferreh Musu Konte at  Youths Ministry, Saidata Sesay and Khadi Bassir  in the field of diplomacy  etc.etc etc you see a   society where the age-old custom of

ĒWomen should be seen, not heard ď has been ¬†killed and buried in Sierra Leone .

I see Sylvia Blyden using her new appointment to help foster and promote  female empowerment in Sierra Leone . Her appointment should be good news also for women in the country.  I have long seen the gradual evolution of a society where women will now make bold to compete neck-and-neck with men for governance of our country.

EBK is also demonstrating his commitment towards the creation of a MERITOROUS society¬†in Sierra LeoneĖA society where people who are excellent in their fields of endeavour will be given the opportunity to showcase their skills, knowledge and ability on a bigger stage . By her exceptional performance in the media establishment in her country, Sylvia Blyden had become too big for the stage at Awareness Times and it was time for her to be given fresh and more deserving and ¬†daunting challenges in the complex task of nation-building and national regeneration. If she continues doing well, she would have paved a way for herself for an even more bigger role in the country. Given the work ethic and excellence she has established in her profession and other enterprises, this was a great appointment by President Ernest Koroma and Sylvia Blyden will definitely excel herself ¬†working with the President, with support from all of us.

We wish her Godís blessings in her new assignment.
