PRESS RELEASE- SIERRA LEONE RURAL WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION PROJECT

The general public is hereby informed that a delegation headed by the Financial Secretary and comprising of officials from the Ministries of Finance and Economic Development, Water Resources and Attorney General; SALWACO, the Chairmen of the Local Councils of the five Project District of Bonthe, Pujehun, Kono, Kambia and Koinadugu successfully concluded negotiations with the representatives of the African Development Bank headed by Mr. Keba Ba, Manager for, Central and West Africa Division, Water and Sanitation Department (OWAS.1) on the proposed Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project through video conference at the ADB Field Office, Bishop Building, Lamina Sankoh Street, Freetown on Friday 8th February 2013.

 

The estimated cost of the Project is UA29.114 million (or equivalent to US$44.88 million) and funded as follows:-

 

a) African Development Fund Loan Amount Million  :    UA9.065

b) African Development Fund Grant Amount Million :    UA 2.854

c) Fragile State Facility (ADB) Grant Amount Million :    UA 2.71

d) Rural Water Supply and sanitation Initiative Grant Amount (UA4.454 Million)  EUR5.3m

e) DFID UK Grant Amount (equivalent to UA 6.25 Million) GBP 6 Million

f) Global Environmental Facility Grant Amount (Equivalent to UA2.597 million US$ 4 million

g) GoSL Contribution (equivalent to UA1.184 million Le7.797 billion

 

The objective of the proposed project is to:- a) increase sustainability access to safe water and basic sanitation in five (Bonthe, Pujehun, Kono, Kambia and Koinadugu districts in Sierra Leone, b) develop a comprehensive national framework for rural water supply and sanitation investments and c) develop a comprehensive Rural Water Supply and sanitation Programme. The project will directly benefit an estimated  625,000 rural Sierra Leoneans in the five project districts.

 

Essentially, the project will finance construction of new water supply facilities including boreholes and solar power scheme, rehabilitate existing water supply facilities, climate risk management infrastructure activities including design and supervision of installation of surface and ground water monitoring equipment and construction of rain water harvesting facilities, community sensitization and training.

 

The ADB component of the project will be presented to its Board for approval on the 6th March 2013 while DFID and the GEF Grant will be approved by their respective institutions.
